HOKITIKA NOTES

(Own Correspondent.) HOKITIKA, June 13. The box factory to be conducted here in connection with Mr Higgins’ sawwill at Koiterangi is now in course of construction on Gibson Quay alongside the Harbour Board building. Mr I’. R. Whitford has the contract, and the building will be completed by September. It will have a. floor space of 6000 square feet (150 by 40), of which a drying kiln will occupy 700 feet, and therein 150,000 feet of timber will be able to be dried each month. The leonipanv entering on the venture have nlready orders in for boxes, and it is stated that inside a year the factory will give twenty-five persons cniployiment. At the Hospital Boaid meeting last ('veiling Air M. McGavin referred to I the principle of one man one job when Ihe asked for a ruling on the question of whether the Board’s Secretary (Mr McCabe) should during the Board’s working hours accept other employment, Mr McCabe having worked as a deputy-returning officer at the recent municipal elections. Mr McGavin sari that while he had no animosity towards the Secretary, he desired a ruling on the point, as he thought the Secretary’s job was a full-time one. Mr W. J. Jeffries said that a number of others had done the same thing, to which Mr McGavin replied that he I was against this sort of thing. Mr T. \V. Duff thought that returning officers should be allowed to pick those they considered to be the best men for these positions, as if incapable persons were : ppointed there would be a mess, and the Board ought not to object if the Secretary acted as a deputy. Rev. Mr Knights asked whether there should not be a notice of motion on the matter. The Chairman said Mr McGavin could give notice of motion if he desired, but otherwise it was only a matter of discussion. Mr G. Davidson said he liked everybody to have an even share of work, but as their hard-work-ing Secretary was not overpaid, and his work entailed a lot of overtime, he was justified in accepting the position. Mr McGavin said that the principle he opposed was that of a paid official leaving his job to do another one. Mr W. A. Jamieson asked if any condition had been made with the appointment. the answer being in the negative. Mr W. H. Even’den said they should not object as the practice had been going on for years. On there being no motion submitted, the Chairman declared the discussion ended. On the occasion of the debutantes’ ball on June 28th in aid of the Westla ml Racing Club, the Mayoress, Mrs (1. A. Perry, will have the debutantes presented to her, and on June 26th Mrs W. Staveiev will have, a rehearsal of the presentation at which she is to direct the proceedings. The Gael sailed at 2 p.m. for Wellington with a timber cargo. The trawler Silver Fern, which put to sea to-day, will to-morrow put in to Greymouth. Mrs E. Melville, sistc of Mrs W. J. Butler, is at present a patient at Westland Hospital, suffering from a broken upper jaw, a broken nose, and a depressed fracture of the cheek bone, as the result of a motor accident in Kanieri at 4.30 p.m. yesterday. A car in which she was travelling with Mrs I Butler, who was driving, collided with a motor lorry that stood on th<* road in the township in front of the Public Hall. 'l'he driver had the sun in her eves as she approached, and the car hit the lorry heavily, the car being much damaged. but the lorry did not suffer much. Mrs Butler was not hurt. The breaking of the wind-screen contributed to Mrs Melville’s injuries. Dr. Wilson, of Hokitika, was soon on the scene and administered first aid. Mrs Melville is now progressing favourably. A meeting of the Executive of the Westland Competitions Society was held last evening. To augment funds it was resolved to hold a. movie dress ball on Wednesday, September 20th. The Secretary (Mr Lindsay) stated several groups of movie parties would he arranged. Some time was spent in revising the syllabus for next year. More attention is to be sought for the vocal and instrumental sections, and it is hoped to revive the school choral and other items. The President very kindly offered a cup for competition between the local clubs —St. Mary’s and All Saints’—the offer being viewed with thanked. The Secretary stated it was hoped to induce both juveniles and seniors to take part in pla.yettes. Mr J. McCluskey was added to the Executive.

The Rugby Sub-Union last night made the following draw for Saturday: Seniors —-Ross v. Excelsior at Ross (A. Cut bush); Pirates v. Kiwi at Cass Square, 3 p.m. (J. Butland). Juniors— School v. Kiwi, Cass Square. 1.30 p.m. (F. Carter); Ross v. Kokatahi, at Kokatahi, 3 p.m. (M. Wallace); Pirates v. Excelsior, Cass Square, 3 p.m. (R. Collett). The application of GWhite for re-grading to junior was refused. Accounts amounting to £2O 8s 6<l were passed for payment. A letter was received from Mr E. M. Best regarding the Southern Division. It was decided to arrange for a suitable train on Saturday for the Hokitika people to travel to Ross to see the Ross v. Excelsior match. A deputation from the Ross Club, comprising Messrs J. Rea (President) and Jones Brothers, waited on the meeting, asking that the match be played at Ross. They referred to the heavy expenditure incurred .in travelling during the season, and said this, together with other expenses, placed the Club’s finances in a- low position.
