DAVIS CUP TIES
SPARKLING TENNIS Exciting Play MCGRATH’S FORM. (Aus. & N.Z. Cable Assn.) LONDON, June 10. Iu tin- tennis quarter final, in the European zone, Crawford defeated Kirby, of South Africa, R/6, 6/1, 6/3; AlcGrath defeated Robbins 7/5, 6/4, 4/6. 10/8. (Received June 11 at. 8.10 p.m.) LONDON, June 11. The Davis Cup tics were continued at the Queen’s Club court, which was well grassed. The weather was gloomy. Crawford, with masterly ease, called the tune to which Kirby, almost throughout. vigorously but vainly danced. There were glimpses of tho form whereby Crawford defeated Cochet. but Kirby scarcely extended the Australian whose service has vastly mproved. He was guilty of only one [double fault in three sets. He rarely 101 l the baseline and was impervious o Kirby’s onslaught. Crawford’s delicate <-hops am, .«crve passing drives were delightful. AlcGrath had a harder task against. Robbins, the champion of South Africa, who is a powerful reliable baseline player. He hits hard on both wings aud is the personification of steadiness. II- forced AlcGrath to fight all the way. A feature of the third set was the endeavour by Rob bins to break down McGrath’s backhand. Tn one rally he hit five success ive drives admirably into the backhand corner, each of which was returned, and the last one with such interest, that Robbins was left standing. AlcGrath’s service in the fourth set provided the day’s brightest tennis. Robbins converting his deficit of ?> 5 into a 6/5 lead. The match swayed excitingly, AlcGrath neatly exploiting chops and bringing Robbins reluctantly to the net, but tho Australian was often beaten when he endeavoured to advance on his own drives.
