THE MAGISTRACY
TRIBUTE TO PRESENT SYSTEM Disapproval to Extension FUNCTIONS OF J'S.P. (P'T Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 10. Mr. Hay, President of the Wellington District Law Society, says that if he understands the proposals of the Minister correctly, regarding Justices, they will involve a complete reversal of the policy of preceding Governmcnts. For many years past the aim of the Department has been to attract to the Magistrates Court bench men of sound legal knowledge and fair judgment. and secondly, to extend the functions and jurisdiction of Magistrates by the appointment of unqualified persons to the bench, would, in his opinion, result in a weakening of the public confidence in the administration of justice by Magistrates.
There arc a comparatively small number of appeals to the Supreme Court al the present time. This shows the respect the public generally. and professions in particular, have for .Magistrates’ decisions.
