MAIN SCHOOL
COMMITTEE MEETING. Thr monthly meeting of the Greymouth Main School Committee was held last evening. Present: Messrs R. A. Bar rowman (chairman), J. C. H. McDonald, A. J. Fairmaid, J. Tennent, R. .1. Williams, A. V. Olliver, 11. Herring and W. G. Scott (secretary). An apology for absence wac I received from Air G. Herring. The Headmaster (Mr .1. Graham) re- | ported as follows for the month of I May: Roll number—Blakctown, boys 48, girls 36, total 84; Alain School, boys 2SI. girls 24.3, total 524. Average attendance —Blakctown, boys 45.3, Igirls 31.8, I('fal 77.1; Main School. I boys 258. girls 224, total 482. Gencoal.—The second term commenced on I May 22. For t his term the relieving assistants appointed by the Board are , Miss N. Trane and Mr Jones. Sports.— , Winter* games are now in progress and flag matches in the various codes have commenced. The basketball teams, ably coached by Aliss Cornwall, conlinue to give a very good account of themselves. Rugby Scven-a-side. — Eight teams were entered from Hie School for the tournament on June 3, held by the West Coast Rugby Union. Considering the few opportunities our box’s have, had of competing with other teams, the display given by them was surprisingly good. The report was adopted. The Secretary said the attendance was up slightly, about 21. at the Alain School, since the last meeting. Tho Chairman and Secretary v’erc appointed a Visiting Committee for the ensuing month. Tho Canterbury Education Board wrote stating that if the rationing scheme was to operate fairly, it. was necessary to make changes in practically every case. There were so many young teachers round about Grey mouth who had no work this year, that the others would have to stand down for a term, the letter added. The Blackball School Committee wrote asking if the Committee favoured the suggestion of a conference of School Committees in the near future to consider the present inadequate, assistance the Education Department was granting school committees. All committees on the West Coast were to bo written to on the matter. Tho Secretary stated that ho had replied stating that the Committee would bo pleased to have a conference any time suitable, and suggesting Greymouth as the venue. The West Coast Basketball Association wrote asking for the use of the School grounds on Wednesdays and Saturdays, when the courts were not in use. The application was granted. Mr James Taylor, the committee’s representative on the School I Committees ’ Association, wrote accepting the re-appointment to the position.
