SCIENCE CONGRESS

CEREAL RUST. (Aus. & N.Z. Cable Assn.) VANCOUVER. June 8. Addressing the Science Congress to day, Doctor W. L. Waterhouse (Syd noy) said as compared with the com I lexity of the problem in America, in combating cereal rust, the situation in Australia was simple, as only on seven different strains of wheat steam rust was found. All but one wore peculiar to Australia, and this one. recently discovered was known in other countries, and had superseded tho other six. No Australian wheats wore resistant in this form of rust, and the plant-breeding problem in Australia was profoundly' affected in consequence. Dr. Waterhouse enipha" sised the desirability of standardisation in the technique, followed in each country, which studied the pro blem, in order that a form of rust in one country might be known by tho same name in another. NO LIFE ON MARS. Doctor AV. S. Adams. Wilson Obser* vatory, Pasadena, said that proof there is insufficient oxygen in bands around Mars to sustain life such as we know it on earth had been supplied through tho medium of the infra red photography. Tie added that recent developments in photography had shown clearly tho oxygen content of Mars’ bands was probably loss than one-tenth of one per cent. 4 Doctor J. S. riaskert (Victoria, British Columbia) added that it definitely set aside the Idea of life on Mars, as we know it on earth.
