BABY’S DEATH. (P' r Press Association). NEW PLYMOUTH, June 9. A Maori, Bella Thomson, of Inglewood, single, aged 20, was charged today with the murder of her newlyborn child on May 24, and with concealment of birth. She was remanded till Tuesday. It is understood that an Inglewood doctor called to attend the accused on May 24, found a child had been born, and the body removed. Subsequently the body was recovered. ILLEGAL DOCUMENT. WELLINGTON, June 9. William Edward Allison was charged to-day with selling documents in imitation of judicial processes. Detec tive-Sergeant Revell said that defendant had written to the police, for a plea of guilty to the Court. The charge was laid under Section 20 ot the Police Offences Act, which provided a maximum penalty of £2O. Defendant had a number of documents printed in Christchurch, headed “Final notice of intention to proceed in the local Court, for the recovery of debt.” Defendant had canvassed New Zealand with these, and people had been prosecuted for sending them out. “Wc know nothing about this man,” said Detective-Sergeant Revell. “We have not had an opportunity of interviewing him, apart from serving the summons.” The Magistrate imposed a fine of £5 on the first charge, and £2 on the second. FATAL ASSAULT. DUNEDIN. June 9. Arthur John Thomas Wilkinson, charged that on June 3, he killed Peter Smith, thereby committing manslaughter, was further remanded till June 15, when the inquest will also be taken. MOTORIST IMPRISONED.

DUNEDIN, June 9. Thomas Alexander -Landreth, charged with intoxication while in charge of a motor, was sentenced to a month’s imprisonment. The charge arose out of an accident, when he collided with a cyclist. SWINE FEVER. WELLINGTON. June 9. An outbreak of swine fever, two miles outside the area to which the previous outbreak was confined, has been verified by the Department of Agriculture, a mile or so from Taita Gorge. A fire at Pieton at 3 a.m. completely destroyed the Post Office Hotel, an old wooden building of about 20 rooms, erected 40 years ago. The flames also i spread to Oxley’s Hotel. adjoining, wiping out the wooden portion, comprising the kitchen, dining room and . other offices. The heat was so great, that Clemens’s Kiosk and J. L. Jones. . booksellers, on the opposite side of j the street, were scorched, and the wini dows broken.

The fire in the Post Office Hotel had a good hold when it was discovered, and the proprietress, Mrs. Hazel Wilson, and the guests and staff had to escape hurriedly in their night attire, nothing being saved. The building and contents were insured in the Sun Office for £2500. The building was owned by J. Hicks, of Canterbury. The insurances on "Oxley’s Hotel, owned by the licensee, W. H. Gittings, are not available, but, it is stated to be well covered.
