KNIFE PLAY

BOROUGH COUNCILLOR BEFORE COURT. (Per Press Association). WAITARA. .lune 9. On a charge that he assaulted John Mallard Crow in a hotel bar at Wai tara. Thomas Briddlecombe Ewens ap pearod at the Waitara Court. Crow suffered a wound on the hand from a knife. Ewon , who is a member of the Waitara Borough Council and president of the Freezing Worker’s Union was given a good character, and was ordered to rome up for sentence if railed upon within six months. A charge of using obsonre language was dismissed. The defence was that after failure of the freezing works strike, the Union ists persecuted Ewens, who became ill and depressed. When he went 10 the bar he had a specially sharpened knife, and during the argument drew the knife, saying before he would be

dragged to the gutter ho would use the knife on himself. ’Crow seized the knife and tho wound was inflicted when Ewens drew it through Crows hand.
