LIGHTNING CAUSES FIRE. (l*''r Press Association). CHRISTCHURCH, dime 8. A house in Dallington, occupied by C. Watson and family, was struck and set afire by lightning during the height of Tuesday evening’s storm. The front windows were blown out. Lightning set a bolster afire on the bed, where Mr. and Mrs. Watson were sleeping. They had a terrifying experience, but a daughter secured the help of two linesmen working at a sub-station nearby, who put the fire out. The switch gear at the sub-station was also damaged. RAILWAYMAN INJURED. INVERCARGILL, June 8. While boarding the Bluff-Invercar-gill train at Greenhills this evening, ’Walter Henry Darlison, a signal adjuster, slipped and the wheel of the guard’s van passed over his foot, which was badly crushed. He was removed to the Southland Hospital, and after an operation had been performed it was reported that his condition was satisfactory. TRAM AND BUS COLLIDE. DUNEDIN, June 8. A tramcar and a Corporation ’bus collided violently late last evening, the latter being thrown on to its side, when the petrol tank exploded, completely destroying the body. The sailing of the Wanganella for Sydney to-day was delayed, the police and Customs officers searching her for £l3OO worth of silver believed to be on board, in contravention of the silver export regulations. The body of William Ramsay, aged ' 65, was found lying in a lime quarry at Pakipaki, near Hastings, this morni ing, the circumstances pointing to ! suicide. Deceased lived in a hutment near the lime works, with two companions. A piece of burnt fuse was found near the body. Deceased was married, but had no family.
