CLASH WITH WATERSIDERS Over Chinese Trimmers SHIP PAYS DEMAND. (Per Press Association;. WESTPORT, June 8. The s.s. Mabel Moller, recently the Kurow, purchased by Chinese interests, arrived in port yesterday for bunkers. A batch of heavy shipping utilised all the union labour available. Instead of following the custom of engaging casuals. the demands tor which could have been easily met at. short notice, the Company engaged eight of its Chinese crew for trimming coal. i A big meeting of the Watersiders ’ Union considered the position this morning and unanimously decided not to work the ship unless the sum of £4 2s <Sd, the equivalent of the amount that would be earned by casuals, if they had been engaged yesterday, was .paid to the Union forthwith. The agent, Mr 1. Slee, conferred with the captain, and agreed to Union demands, and the loading ]>roceeded with all union labour. The Union’s action demonstrated Illi* value of organisation.
