REEFTON NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent). REEFTON', May 5. A special meeting o f the Tnangahua County Council was held to consider the appointment of a County Engineer. Fifteen applications were received for the position. Mr M. Fennell, of Tailmarunui was the successful applicant. He is well known on the West Const, having for thirteen years been engaged in the Buller County, and he holds excellent credentials from the Public Works Department. Ho is u son of the late Air John Fennell, formerly a well-known and popular resident, of Lyell. Ihe death took jdaep at a privatehospital in Wellington on April 24th, of Mr William Charles McDonald, a son-in-law of Air John Aluldoon. of Reefton. The deceased, wh o was aged 50 years, visited Reef ton on several occasions, the last time, some 18 months ago. The Big River Company commenced crushing yesterday, when everything was reported to be running satisfactorily, and crushing operations will be continued With two shifts. Reports from the mine, state that the stone is continuing of good quality, and shares changed hands yesterday at l s 40. Crushing operations ceased bv the former company, the New Big River Coy. in February 1927. The annual meeting of the* Reefton Old Girls’ Basketball Club was held on Tuesday night when the balance sheet was read and showed a small credit balance for the year 1932. All Club matters were discussed, th e subscriptions to be 2s 6d per member, and the colours to be the same as last year, royal blue and gold. Numerous new members were welcomed to- the Club, which shows the growing popularity of basketball in this district. Discussion was put forward, as to whether a tournament could be held on June 3rd., consisting of junior and senior teams from the AVaiuta, Ikamatua, Cronadun and Rev ft on districts. The Secretary was asked to inquire from the respective clubs if such a fixture could be arranged. The election of officers resulted as follows:—President, Air E. Clark; coach, Air E. Clark; Secretary, Aliss G. McKane (re-elected); captain, Aliss C. Panckhurst (re-elect-ed); vice captain, Aliss I Kearns; committer*, Alisses AL Alborn, J. Cleaver, IT Afitehell, C. Panckhurst (2), G. AfcKanp and I. Kearns. The new members to the Club, namely, Misses G. Floyd. K. Coglan, F. Allen, I. Kearns, Al Brooks, H. AlitcheH, E, Barkel, J Cleaver, C. AVoods, P. Bart left, A. Sparks. F. Sparks avid W. Palmer. were welcomed. Regret was expressed at losing Aliss Hutton, who for the past year had been an excellent coach and President to the Club, and

(Air Patterson), reduction of rent on three claim licenses for 1 year; C. A. Morris (Air Patterson*) reduction of rent on one claim for one year (recoin mended). The following applications were adjourned:—J. E. Allen (Mr Morgan), prospecting license, .10 acres,' Blk. XA'T, Mawheraiti; S. 1). Aitcliison and A. D. Alarsden, junr. (Air Alorgan), prospecting license, 100 acres in Blks VII and 111, Mawheraiti; John Collins (Air Alorgan) prospecting license, 100 acres near the Big River; Christina Cole (Air Morgan), residence site license, small area at AA r aiuta; John Coghlan, prospecting license, 80 acres in Blk. XA’T, Reefton; A. D. Alarsden, junr. (Air Morgan) prospecting license, 56 acres, in Blks. ATI and VIII. Mawheraiti S.D.; C. Ronchi and L. McVicar (Air Patterson), prospect ing license, 100 acres on Big River; H. A Lockington withdrew an application for a tramway license, 75 chains, Reefton and extension of time to dispose of same. Alfred Clark (Air Morgan) applied (1) prospecting license over 10 acres in Blk. VII, Afawheraiti; (2) a special site license over 24i acres in Blk ATI, Mawheraiti; (3) leave to amend foregoing application for a special site license so as to reduce area to 5 acres; and (4) a water race license, thirty heads, in Blk. ATI, Alawhoraiti. All were objected to by Air Henry Jones (Mr Patterson). The prospecting license was granted so far as same did not overlap renewable leasehold areas and the objector’s prospecting area, the objector being al lowed costs £1 7s. The application for a special site was refused with costs to objector of £6 2s. The water race license application was with drawn.

At the Afagistrate’s Court a prose cution by the Inspector of Mines (C. J. Strongman) of W. J. Morris .failed. The grounds of action were that he was owner of the Perfection Aline and when required by the. .Inspector to instal a fan did not do so; also that as owner he did not. supply sufficiently proper materials and appliances. Both charges were dismissed as defendant is not legal owner of the mine. J. AV. Smith, Manager of Perfection Aline, charged with failing to see that a sufficient supply of proper materials and appliances were supplied, was convicted and fined £1 10s. Cecil Curtis, underviewor at the mine, for failing to see that certain necessary materials and appliances were sent into the districts, was also convicted and fined £1

and costs 10s. Elizabeth Harris sued Adam Harris for disobedience of a maintenance order to the extent of £l7 J9s up to 6th April last. The case was adjourned to Alay 17. 'The police charg ed IL A. Curnow with being idle and disorderly in that ho had no visible lawful means of support, and obtained credit by a false pretence. He was remanded till Alay 1.1, on bail of £lO and a surety of £lO. A prohibition ordCT was granted against a resident. The following debt eases were dealt with:—Joseph Nohra v. A. L. Schroder, judgment summons for £7 10s 9d; an order was made for payment with costs by instalments, in default 14 days imprisonment in Grcymouth prison; Joseph Nohra v. J. Clark, a judgment summons for £9 os. An order was made for payment with costs by instalments, in default. 21 days imprisonment in Greymouth prison. A charge by G. N. Orsbourne of obtaining credit by means of a valueloss cheque against D. Hughes and J. W. Daly was withdrawn.
