HOKITIKA NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent). HOKITIKA, May 5. The Gael is due to-morrow night from Wellington, which port she left last evening. The trawler Nile, which had been absent for a. week, without any news of her whereabouts, arrived here this evening. She had been sheltering from adverse weather al Jackson’s Bay, South Westland. Licensing eases before the Court here to-day included those of six men charged with being illegally on local hotel premises, all being convicted and ordered to pay costs. Two similar cases against Ross residents had similar results, and a Ross hotelkeeper was fined £2 for selling liquor after hours. Constable Crowley said that he found two men at the bar slide with the licensee, glasses being in front of each. The licensee said that ho had invited the men in to have a drink. Charges of failure to pay unemployment levy were brought against R. Al. Durham (2), and T. Robinson (5). they being convicted and ordered to pay costs. A charge of breach of maintenance order against the former was adjourned, as was a similar case against N. Karnbach. F. G. McMurt reo ws ordered to pay costs for riding an unlicensed motor cycle. Mr AL McGavin, the new Borough Councillor, has not been long in making his presence felt in the Council. This morning he called the attention of the Mayor to the danger of the sea encroaching on properties on the west side of Revell Street, and demanded that His Worship draw the attention of the Minister of Public Works to this danger, and ask the Minister to have the District Engineer of Public Works prepare a report on the practicability of protection works that would save /he threatened properties.

There were twenty-three mining applications before Warden Meldrum to-day at the Warden’s Court (including thirteen from Ross district), of which the following were granted:— Ross district: Gillespie’s Beach Gold Dredging Co. (Mr Murdoch), license for special site. Kumara district: William Conal Guy (Mr Murdoch - ), water race license for two years; V. J. Robinson, on behalf Kapitea Mining Syndicate, prospecting license. (Mr Murdoch), special alluvial claim; Callaghans Mining Co., claim license. Applications withdrawn were-. Harry Newman (Mr Elcock), alluvial claim license; Vivian Joseph Robinson (Air Murdoch), prospecting license; same, special dredging license; George Linklater (Mr Murdoch), prospecting license. Two senior Rugby games will be played at Cass Square to-morrow. Pirates will put the following team in the field against Ross; George, Woolhouse, Agnew, Lareombe, Pfahlert, Free, Boyd, Lewis, Thorpe, Schist, Osbourne, Harrison, Richards, Inglis and Hyndman. For the other senior game Kiwis will face Excelsiors with the following team: Sumner, Griffen, Cooper, Stopforth (2), Leslie, Walker, Kelly, Henderson, Paterson, Fleming, Diedrich, Moore, West, Heinz. Emer-i gencies: Barrett and Wright. The Excelsior team are: G. Kelly, Growcott, King, Hughes (2), Palmer, Freitas, AL Kelly. Havill, Davidson, MuirConnolly, Schroder, George, Mitchell; emergency, L. Eager. The junior games will be: Kiwis v. z School at Cass Square, Pirates v. Excelsiors at Rimu, and Kokatahi v. Ross at Ross. Pirates team are: C. Ogilvie, W. Growcott, D. Agnew, T. O’Connor, A. Cooper, D. Keenan, C. Crase, W. Kelly, C. Freitas, A. Muir, D. Chesterman, A. Dale, G. Wright, E. Broadbent, B. Howart, H. Mason. T. Growcott, J. Smith, W. Stoop.
