The latest Gazette announces the appointment of Mr N. 'l'. Lnmbourne as Director of Education. Miss Mary Syme has returned to Christchurch, after visiting her parents in Runanga. Mr IF. E. Holland M.P. will arrive from Cristchurch by this afternoon’s express, en route to West port. A Canberra message stated that it was definite, that the report that Sir 1. Isaacs (Governor-General) contemplated retirement, was untrue. Mr M. Fennell, of Tauniaranui, has been appointed engineer to the Inanga hua County Council, from among fifteen applicants. The health of Sir Thomas Sidey, who is an inmalt* of a private hospital in Dunedin, is causing his friend con-! corn. Mr M. C. McGregor, who was injured in an aeroplane accident at the Manawatu Air Pageant in November, is - making good progress towards recovery in the Palmerston North Hospital. The funeral of the late Mrs Emma Curnow took place yesterday afternoon at Karoro Cemetery. The services at the residence of her daughter. Mrs 11. Herring. The death is announced from Melbourne of Mr James Angus, aged 73, a native of Invercargill, from heart failure, following a motor accident. lie was Vice-President of the Victorian Institute for the Blind, and though blind himself, worked energetically for many years in the interests of the Institute. Mr and Mrs R. (,;. McNab. Courtney Street, Motueka, celebrated their golden wedding on 22nd April. They were married at St. Thomas’s Church, Motueka. in 1883, by the Rev. Mr Poole; and for many years resided in Karamea, returning to the Motueka district 19 years ago. They were the recipients of many presents and telegrams of congratulations. Yesterday afternoon, at the Greymouth Technical School. Mr B. M. Davis, who has been mathematics and science master at the School, and who leaves to-day for Auckland to assume a similar position, was farewelled by the pupils. The senior girl prefect. Miss Iris Burrell, paid a tribute to the work, and the popularity of Mr Davis, and expressed the regret that was felt at his departure. Mr 11. Mathieson, head prefect, in making a presentation of five volumes, referred at length to the fine qualities of Mr Davis, his popularity among the scholars and the assistance which he had given them in the classroom and on the field of sports. The school greatly regretted his departure, but wished him all the best in Auckland. They trusted that, when reading the volumes, he would remember the boys and girls of his old school. The Principal. Mr R. McLaren, said that tho results of Mr Davis’s work were shown by the succes« of his pupils in the examinations. He had been a very valuable man, and the school was unfortunate in losing him. In reply, Mr Davis said that he was sorry to leave after six years’ connection with the school, but he would always remember the pupils and the friendships that he had made at the school. Three cheers were given for Air Davis, and the singing of “For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow” concluded the gathering. Last evening, Mr and Mrs Davis were tendered a farewell social at the school, by the pupils.
