(Our Own Correspondent.) HOKITIKA, February 15. The Gael, which has been prevented from sailing for Wellington by the bad weather, is expected to leave this evening for that port. As a result of the heavy rain last, night, the river was in high flood today, but it ran out in the early ingOn Friday the annual excursion of the Ruatapu. Ross and other southern schools will be held, the venue being Greymouth, and a large exodus is expected. The train leaves Ross at 8.30 a.m., leaving Greymouth on return at 5,30 p.m. Fares from Ross (return) are: Adults 3s, children Is 6d. The death of a former Kumara resident, Airs Sarah Schulstad, aged 94, occurred recently at North Woodburn. New South Wales. Air O. Schulstad, of South Woodburn. New South Wales, would be glad of particulars of her residence in Kumara prior to 1887. At the County Council Finance Committee meeting last evening', Messrs F. Howard and S. Holley made a com plaint as to a notice .from the Clerk regarding working short hours on the 6th inst. The Clerk explained he was notified shortly after noon that the man had left off work, and notice had been sent by letter that the full eight hours must be worked daily, and unless an assurance was received that this would be done, their names would bp removed from Iso. 5 list. .Messrs Holley and Howard made statements to tile Committee. In answer to the Chairman it was stated all the men knocked off early at the time complained of. owing to a mistake, and they thought they should not have been picked out. The only names reported were those of the present complainants. It was admitted that all the men had knocked oil before five o'clock. The Chairman said the meeting would hear further evidence pn the matter, and tire complainants withdrew. Later, it was decided to confer ith tl'.e Mayor in respect to the work (111 :3(. aerodrome where County and Borotiqli men were employe!., the two bodies to co-operate as to action in respect to the workmen not putting in lull time daily. It is reported th.: Ross Deep Levels will lie worked again in the near future, and will bo worked on a large scale, a - large amount of capital being available fur the project. Mr Seoble. Inspector of Mines, is in Ross at present, making an inspection of various mines and mining propositions in the district. The County Council Finance Committee meeting was attended last evening by Crs .1. A. Murdoch (County Chairman), W. Jeffries and Al. Keenan. Apologies were received from Crs. Searle and Jamieson. The accounts for the month of January, totalling £1583 15s lOd were passed. It was resolved to take action with regard to arrears owing on ferry reserves leased by the Council. It was decided to write to the Railways Department in regard to the centre spans of the Ilokitika railway bridge which had been endangered by the late flood. The Chairman was empowered to arrange with the Overseer re leave of absence. Three weeks’ leave. was granted Miss Ross, of the office staff. It was decided to write to the Certifying Oflieer regarding unemployed registered in the County. The District Engineer wrote regarding Waitaha Settlement protection, suggesting the Public Works contribute £45, and the settlers ami the County £45 each toil arils the cost of the work. Geo. Linklater. Waitaha, wrote regretting the settlers were unable to make any i-onf ribution to the work. It was resolved to notify the settlers that if their coni ribution could not be provided. the Council would not contribute. C. Cook. Kaihinu. asked for an extension of 1 Callaghans road for a distance of seven or eight chains for transport of material to Lawson’s Flat, and the Overseer is to report on the cost. Dr. Telford, Health Oflieer, wrote I'!' plan of Okarito cemetery and removal of bodies, the cost of which would have to be borne by the Council ami Trustees. A reply is Io be sent that the charge was a legitimate one against the Government. The Marine Department enquired if it was desired to have the management of Okarito wharf vested in the Council. It was resolved io defer consideration. W. Morris, Kokatahi, asked for over the fence assistance with unemployed labour. —Granted as labour is available. Mr T. Casey detailed work on Wataroa footbridge, asking consideration of an extra, and £2 was approved in respect to extra work authorised. Mr C J. I’- Sellers notified application by Messrs Mclntosh and McQuilkin for prospecting license at Blue Spur. A. R. Elcock notified application by Antiss ami party for water race, Totara district. Both approved on usual conditions.
