STOCKTON NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent.) The Stockton mine will be idle all this week, but it may resume operations on the 12th of December, and ■work approximately up to the Xmas j holidays. The weather during the week-end has been very cold and wet, particularly on Sunday. Mr J. Benuctt has been operated on at the Christchurch Hospital, and although his state was rather low after the operation, it has now slightly improved. This is the third operation for Mr Be.iwett in a comparatively short period, an ordeal that has a telling effect on the strongest of men. Mr Miller, who suffered an injurv at the mine recently, is making ' steady progress to complete recovery. Mr A. Merrett has arrived back on the Hill after a sojourn at the Westport Hospital fur treatment to an in jureil hack. Mr Merrett will return to the Hospital for further treatment when the masseiisi* returns from her holidays. Nurse Murray was a recent visitor to Stockton in connection with her work as I’lunket Nurse. A cricket match took place on Saturday between representatives ol Ngakawau and Stockton at Stockton. Ngakawau went in to wield the willow first, ami knocked up a score of 44 runs, with one extra, making a total of 15. Stockton replied with 70. Some of the Stockton balsmen retired voluntarily. as the weather took a sudden change, with sonic heavy showers. The game was played in a sporting spirit, while ' lie of the Ngakawau f rundlers was conspicuous by his baseball tactics. Throwing the hall in baseball is quite in order, but in crick ot it is a ‘‘no ball". Triindlcr Cook should in future take notice, as. with a keener umpire, his reputation would inevitably suffer. IL Eox was the top scorer for Stockton. Both sides repeatedly changed their bowlers, and it had the desired effect of getting wick ets. Geddes, whilst batting at the school end. received a severe knock with the ball, but the play was resuni (‘tl after a moment’s delay. A little practice bv both teams could be in tlulged in to advantage. Mr T. Barnes, of Stockton, has sol I his residence to Mr T. McGhie, mine manager, Mr McGhie and family moved in last Eritlay. Mr Barnes is slaying with his son for a short time. A spe<i:il meeting of the Si<-k Emul Committee was held oil. Sunday morning to discuss the withdrawal of the West port Main Miners’ I nion. I uder the present <-i rciimsl a nces, there was noth iii"’ else to be done, as the Westport Main mine has only worked a lew shifts for the whole year, ami when it seemed as though on order lor two I thousand tons of coal would be sup , plied by that mine, only half that I amount was lakmi. There are strong rumours going tin' i rounds at the moment that the State mines are supplying slack coal al the I mlietiloiisly low figure of 5/6 per ton on the irmk. If it is correct, (ami the source of i n forma (ion seems fairly reliable) then all one can say is that cotif cannot lie mined 1<» bp sold at such a price. < >n Saturday next we shall have here the scree ni ng of “The Rogue’s Song, with L. Tibbett taking the lead. Til>b.'tt is one of the screen artists worth hearing. If the talkie patrons could be given something worth while, and* i not so much of what one can only term drivel, a leaning towards the more beautiful in life would result. The Stockton and Millerton members of the Homing Pigeon Society sent Ih<’ir birds as far as Erankton June lion during the week end. but up to the time of writing, all of the birds are absentees. Trie weather, no doubt, has made it extremely difficult, for the birds, particularly those that can be termed first, flight birds. However, as the weather improves they may return. “Better late than never." But better never late! There is cverv prospect of members of the Union obtaining a share' of the work on the Tin Town road this week. There will be about forty pounds to be spent on labour, apart from the work to the bridges. A meeting prior Io I he rommeiiccmcnt of operat ions will be held to select the men.
