REPEAL OF DRY LAW

A SHORT DELAY U.S.A. House Vote NEARLY TWO TO ONE MAJORITY. (Aus, & N.Z. Cable Assn.) WASHINGTON, December 5. The House of Representative’s, to day took a vote on the Garner re so ution, for the Prohibition repeal. The voting was as follows: — For R‘‘peal 272 Against Repeal . . . . 144 Majority for . . . . 128 T,h(. division failed by a very small ma.gin to give the two thirds majority of the House necessary q'or the approval of the resolution. A change of only six votes would have brought about the adoption of the resolution, whieft was thus rejected, and, inasmuch as Speaker Garner has said that he could not permit another vote on repeal this session, th e vote is bc ieved to have killed the question at least until the new Congress meets. The resolution had support from Republican leadership. Senator Joseph Robinson, Democratic leader, stated in the Senate that the Democratic programme for the prompt consideration of prohibition proposals, would not be affected by the House vote. A Bill to modify the Volstead Act to permit the sale of naturally fermented wine s was introduced by Representative Clarence Lea (Democrat), Cali fornia). Representative John O’Connor (Democrat New York) introduced a Bill to legalise the sale of beer containing 3 2 per cent, alcohol, by weight.
