The large whnt-p n.l«-• i about a mile north of Aw.unna, the mouth of the Waimea Creek, has attracted a great many spectators, numbers motoring there from a distance. It is a huge carcase, but al high water the sea* wash it about, though it can be reached afoot as the tide falls. The tinders will remove the whalebone, and may also undertake oil extraction. The weather has again become unseasonable, rain falling al the weekend, ami cold conditions prevailing this evening. Yesterday the local Pigeon Club held a medal race over a course of 60 miles from Springfield, across cloudy ranges. The result was that -Mr J. Andrews’ “Little Hope’’ was first, the time being two hours, and the same owner* s “Fleetwing” was second, while G. Kerr’s “Flyaway Jack” was third. On Wednesday at 2 p.m. the formal opening of the Mental Hospital bowling green will take place, and Hokitika Club members will attend. The green is in excellent order. Last week’s rainfall was about an inch, and the sunshine recorded was 52} hours.

Some damage on country roads has resulted from recent rains, erosion having been caused by Docherty’s Creek below Waiho, by the Upper Waitaha River, ami by the Hokitika River at Koiterangi.

Rev. L. Dewar, a licentiate of the Presbyterian Church, was last week inducted as Minister at Ross, Revs H. RFell (Greymouth) and G. A. Naylor (Hokitika) conducting the induction. At the close, Mr Dewar and his wife were welcomed by the Mayor of Ross, Mr J. Murdoch. Mr Osmers, on behalf of the Church of England, Mr Rowe, for the Bible Class Movement in Westland, and the Rev. Mr Fell as moderator of the Presbytery, all extended very cordial greetings to Mr Dewar. Later Mr Murdoch, on behalf of the people of Ross, made a presentation of a cheque to Mr D. McClymont, wishing him every happiness in his new sphere of work. Mr ami Mrs McClymont have left for Southland, and will take with them the good wishes of many friends. The first road cycle race in connection with the Gillman Cup will be held by the Hokitika Club on Wednesday, commencing at 3 30 p.m.. the distance being about eight miles. To enable the public to witness more of the race, a lap course has been chosen commencing at Gillman’s Hotel, thence along Bealy Street to Stafford Street, and along Stafford Street past the town boundary to Stuart’s Mill, and returning by Stafford Street to Livingstone Street and Gibson’s Quay to the starting noint.
