Lord VaL a noted mud lark, ran such a good race on the first dav at Trentham that when conditions the second day were so favourable his prospects appearinl particularly bright. He failed to run on at the right eml, however, and finished widl out of the money. It transpires that he did badly over the week-end, hardly eating a bile of his feed, so that then* is a good excuse for his failure. His mate. Woodful. is not quite good enough for tin* best hack company. While Spearful has not given much encouragement to his New Zealand ('up admirers in his races this season, his brother. Full Mark, appears to

have conn* right back Io his best. Like Soearl'iil. he belongs t<> Alessrs E. and N. Foreman, and the joint owners would not take the risk of producing him at Trentham. Full Mark put in as long a sustained run in the highweight at Masterton as Spearful possessed at his best, and there are more improbable things that may happen Ilian this hurdler’s troubling flat handicappers at Riccarton off the bottom mark. The difficulty may be to find a strong enough rider for him. To the former Riccarton horse Comprise will fall the distinction of carrying No. 1 saddlecloth in the Melbourne Cup on Tuesday. He has 9st 11b. Twelve months ago his weight in the race was 7st 51b, but. though the trip was contemplated, it was not made. The outstanding failure of the Wellington meeting was that of Princess Doreen in the Wellesley Stakes. In view of her earlier form it was a disappointing performance, but it is understood that her connections are satisfied that she could not do her best on the soft going. It would therefore be unwise to condemn her utterly for this one failure. Fair Weather, who lost by a nose to Lord A’al in that thrilling finish for the C .T.C. Selwyn Handicap on August 13th. is fancied in the far south for the Stewards’ Handicap, in which he has 7st 41b. At Wingatui this month. Fair Weather won the six furlongs Electric Handicap with 9st and was third in the Shorts with 9st 41b. He is a four-year-old gelding by Weathervane, and is trained at Wingatui by J. Buttledge, for Air A. N. Smith.

In the Mitchelson Cup, to be run at Ellerslie on Saturday week. Antique has 151 b above the weight allotted him in the New Zealand Cup, and Te Hoia is up to 141 b. but Korokio, despite her recent successes, is only up 101 b. Korokio has not fared so well in the Ricearton Handicap, to be run on New Zealand Cun day. Four candidates for the big race are also in the Riccarton. Compared with the Cup imposts. Korokio is up 311 b, Chopin up 181 b, Red Sun up 111 b, and Earthquake up 91b.

TROTTING.

Harold Logan is definitely to start in the Cup Trial at Wellington to-day, and despite his failure at Oamaru he will liearly bp favourite. Royal Silk will be penalised 12 yards in the New Zealand Cup if he wins this race, and the stable may roly on Red Shadow, whose last success was over two miles. Glcnrossie is reported to have been doing groat work at Hutt Park, and Terence Dillon is in splendid form for

a mile and a quarter. Those two will keep Harold Logan and Red Shadow doing their best if Royal Silk is :ib Great interest will attach to tin* rii.’i ning of David Ale El wy a and Indianapolis in the Borough Handicap of a mile and a half, the Derby distance, at Wellington to-day. Taxpayer easily defeated David McElwyn over a mile and a quarter at the last ’Wellington meeting, and the showing of Tndianopolis against the American horse will l>e accepted by many as a true line on his prospects in the three-year-old classics. Indianapolis has raced greenly in his two starts under Tonfkinson to date, but in both starts he has shown that he possesses great speed for a three-year-old, and ho will not lack experience by November. Nelson’s Victorv has not raced since the Alethven meeting, where he was solidly supported toward the close of totalisator operations in the cup. Giving away 72 yards, he had to cover a lot of extra ground, and did not see the journey out. Five furlongs from home he made a brilliant run to get up to fourth place, and on 24 yards in the October Handicap at Wellington he will have a better chance of sustaining his fine turn of speed. Thp pacer Stormy Mac. who scored his first win in the Improvers’’ Handicap at Epsom, was purchased by his present owner. Mr V. Barchard, two years ago, for about £5. When first trained at Epsom by G. Webb, he showed some promise, and since joining A. W. Broughton’s stable at Te Awamutu he has raced fairly consistently, having notched two good seconds prior to Saturday’s win. Tactless has been rehandicapped to 72 yards in the Riccarton Handicap at the Metropolitan meeting. The 12 months’ disqualification imposed on Ngingongingo by the Auckland Trotting Club, is up. and the pacer will be prepared by R. J. Humphreys. Ngingongingo has not been idle during his holiday, and his owner, Miss E. Hinds, stated recently that she is very pleased with thp work ho has boon showing. The trotting fields at Wellington are weak in numbers, but the quality is fairly good. El Merit, Fairyland. Stanley Bingen and Wah have good recent form over a mile and a half, but if Louis Bingen trots solidly in both races, he should be the hardest to beat.
