WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

BRUNNER BRANCH Last week, the members of the Brunner Bianch of the Women’s Institute gathered to celebrate their first birthday. Tlie hall, which was well filled with members and visitors from Runanga, Ahaura and Ngahere, had been prettily arranged with supper tables and bowls of Iceland poppies. A large stall of handwork made by the members of the Institute, also a sales table of handwork, cookery a nd novelties, added greatly to the appearance of the hall. Mrs J, Pollock presided and the proceedings opened with the singing of the Institute Song. The President extended a warm welcome* to the visit-

ing ladies. Pleasing musical items were given by Mrs McCullough (songs), Miss Bogers (songs) and Miss Smcatou (monologues). Miss M. Creagh acting as a ccompaniste. Several exciting competitions added to the gaiety of the evening. A very dainty sit-dow n supper was served by the Committee. Mrs A. Smith, the Institute’s most aged member then extinguished th c candle on the cake, and Mrs Pollock (President) before cutting the cake asked Mrs Smith to accept a dainty bouquet of flowers on behalf of the members. The following toasts were the n honoured: —“The King,” proposed by the President; “Our Visitors.” proposed by Mrs McMahon. Mrs Symeg (Runanga), responding; “Absent Mem bers, ’’ proposed by Mrs G. Smith, who said she was sorry to drop as it were such a brick amidst such gaiety, but asked the members to spare a thought for those members who were absent owing to illness. Th e President then presented Miss E. Hallinan with a crystal sweet dish, donated by Mrs McCullough for the best lampshade made during the year; also thc prizes for the various competitions were awarded. Mesdames Braithwaite (Runanga) and Paul (Ahaura) on behalf of their members, thanked thc Brunner ladies for th e enjoyable* evening and complimented them on their display of handcrafts. A very happy gathering was brought to a conclusion by the singing of Auld Lang Syne.
