HOKITIKA NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent). HOKITIKA, October 27. The quartz mining operations nt Aft. Greenland, near Ross, are evidently proving productive as a parcel of 108 ounces of gold, worth nearly £650, has recently come to Ross from the claim. Earlier during the year over 200 ounces was obtained at the claim. The amount of stone crushed has not been stated, but six men are engaged in the operations. Air D. J. Evans, who has recently been a patient at Lewisham Hospital, Christchurch, has sufficiently recovered from his serious illness to return to Hokitika, where he arrived last evening by the express. He remains, how-,, ever, in a very weak state of health. High praise for the Westland Hospital ami its administration was voiced bv Air George Fitzpatrick, superintendent of the New South Wales Community Hospital, after a visit of inspection to that institution noon his return to Hokitika from the glaciers this week, lie stated that, in Hokitika, he found what is regarded in Australia as the ideal public hospital—one where voluntary services are active; that is, where people take a real share in the management, and in this respect commented favourably on the action of one member of the Board who devoted much of his time to voluntary service to the institution. “Whether it is a

good idea.’’ ho said, “to have two administrative heads, that is a medical superintendent as well as a secretary —which is almost akin to having two captains on one ship —is a matter that can onlv bp judged by the results in individual cases.’’

Weather permitting, three of the outboard motor boat, races postponed from Monday last will be decided at Lake Ranieri to-morrow. commencing -at 1 o’clock. The remaining three races of the postponed programme will be held at the Lake on Wednesday afternoon next.

Mr Win. Smith, of Hampden Street, celebrated his 82nd birthday yesterday. A number of friends gathered at his residence in the evening when Air Smyth danced with his sister, Mrs Fisher, who is now in her 79th year. The function closed with the singing of Auld Lang Syne. Air Smith was out with the very early surveyors on the West Coast, and has probably an idea of the back country as comprehensive as that of any other pioneer who survives from the early days. The results of the Okarito dredge’s operations for tin* four weeks from September 10 to October 8. wore as follows: Gohl won, .130 oz 18dwt; time worked, 437 hours; non-working time, 139 hours (including two days shifting pipe line); yardage treated. 25,300. an average of 58 cubic yards per hour; average value of ground (on basis of gold worth £4 per ounce), 5d per cubic yard. Messrs M. Houston and Co. report that the annual spring sale of surplus stock from South Westland was hold at the Wataroa yards on Thursday with a good attendance of buyers. The yarding of cattle was fairly heavy, but except a few pens of good Hereto rd s from the far south, the entry comprised nondescript sorts. The sale opened firmer than expected, and good prices were realised throughout. Sales were: On account of R. Williams. 3 yearling steers at £2 2s lid. 4 yearling heifers at £2 10s; on account of R. Ritchie. 13 2-year steers at £5, 10 2-year heifers at £3 13s (id; on account of Harris Bros., G 2-year Hereford steers at £5 7s fid, 5 at £4 17s fid, •> fat and forward heifers at £5 2s fid, 3 2-vear heifers at £4; on account of client, 20 mixed steers at £4 10s, 1 heifer at £3 2s Gd.
