WESTPORT NOTES

(From Our Own Correspondent). Labour Meeting. WESTPORT, September 20. At the conclusion of Mr Holland’s] address, a report of which appeared in yesterday's issue, the speaker re-‘ ferrod to the imprisonment of Messrs Galbraith, Griffen and Robinson at Wellington. The men did not have-tho right of trial by .jury and lie (the speaker) did not think any Magistrate should have the power to impose a sentence of three years' imprisonment. Efforts would be made to arrange a conference between tin* representatives of tin* Denniston Miners’ Union and the Company with a view to bringing about a settlement of the present di< putt*. The Labour Party would also ask for a comprehensive enquiry into tin* coal trade*. Referring to the Buller Gorge railway, Mr I lo'land was of the opinion that if the line had been completed it would now be a sound economic proposition. The Board had

more power than the Government. The position was anomalous and one that should be speedily remedied. If the Government was desirous id' com plot- j ing the line tin* work could not bo’ proceeded with without the permission (if the Railway Board. If the Labour Party were in power the first thing they would do would be to take that power from the Railway Board. Ho (Mr Holland) and lie Labour Party were opposed to tin* action of the Government in prolonging the life of Parliament for a year longer than they were elected for. However, he was of the opinion the present Government would be forced tc go to tin* country before the four years had expired. Education Matter;. The above Club brought the season to a close last evening, when the final competition was won by W. Earl. Air A. J. Green, in the unavoidable absence of the President, Air G. H. Hutchison. W. Struthers. A. L. Williams, A. C. Baseand. An Aerodrome.

That then* are still in Westport a few people who are awake to the demands of the times is evidenced by the interest of the members of the local Aero Club in efforts to secure a site for the purpose of building an aerodrome. Alodern life has developed new needs and methods of transport and there is every sign that AVestport will in the near future be able to boast of an aerodrome and a landing | ground second to none in the country ■ and will as a consequence be able to adapt herself to the inexorable requirements of the present period of progress as far as transport is concerned. A site at the North Beach which visiting airmen are unanimous would be ideal was visited yesterday by members of the club, but on investigation it was found that a body styling themselves f ‘The Coal Distillation and By-Products Co.’’ were seeking an option over portion of the property and already had plans prepared, suggesting that the area would in time become a hive of industry. However, this proposition is not taken too seriously, and tin* Aero Club members are of the opinion if the 'drome was built now it would require more than one coat of paint before carbonisation in Westport would bo giving cheap benzine, dyes, etc. It is to be hoped the Club will be successful in securing the site and that AVestport will as a result be provided with a long felt want. Personal. Alessrs 11. R. Young (Westport) ami R. English (Christchurch), directors ot the Coal Distillation and By-Products Co., N.Z.. leave shortly for England on a two mouths’ trip for the purpose of inducing English financiers to interest, themselves in the West Coast project.
