HOKITIKA NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent.) HOKITIKA, September 20. For last week the Okarito dredge obtained a return of 344 ozs 12 dwts of gold for 1.14. hours work. The death occurred at the Westland Hospital yesterday at 5 p.m. of Mr Joseph Campbell, at the age of 63 years. He expired whilst under an anaesthetic. About 1.30 p.m. yesterday, while engaged at work at the entrance to the Hokitika cemetery, under the unemployment scheme, Campbell cut his right foot, at the ankle, with an adze, severing a tendon. He was given aid, and was then taken to Dr. Wilson’s surgery for attention. After this he was conveyed to his home at Kanieri by car to enable him to change from his working clothes and then he was taken to the hospital for an operation to join up the severed tendon. Dr. Teichelmann examined the patient and pronounced him fit for an anaesthetic, and he was taken to the operating theatre, where Drs. Wilson. Teichelmann and Childs were present. When giving the anaesthetic, the patient collapsed and in spite of every effort made by the doctors, the patient failed to rally and passed away. The deceased was a well-known resident of the district for a long period of years. He leaves a widow and family of five, the eldest being 17 years, ami the youngest 12 months. An inquest will be held on Friday before Coroner Meldrum. The, overland trip of the local Aero ('lnb’s plane to-day was a complete

success. They motored to the Railway i Hotel for refreshments and left by ] plane for Christchurch at 10.35 o’clock. One new member was elected and one resignation accepted. The balance sheet showed the Club to be in a strong position financially. It was decided to ■ officially' open the season with a regatta on Labour Day, when a number j of visiting boats are expected to take part, ami an endeavour is to be made to arrange for holding the South Island championship at that meeting. Mr J. Radford presented the following trophies: Teichelmann Cup to R. McMillan; Tulloch Cup to F. Andrews; Mclntosh Cup to F. Andrews. At the conclusion of the meeting the retiring president, Mr Radford, entertained the members at supper. The Westland Rugby Sub-Union met last evening. Present: Messrs J. C. Stafford (chairman), D. R. Dowell, A. Thompson, F. McGregor, W. Stopforth, A. Cut bush, J. McCleary R. A. Bell and E. W. Heenan. Ross Club was declared the winner of the Breeze Shield for the junior knock-out competition. Kiwi ( Reefton) Club wrote thanking the Sub-Union for hospitality to the members of the team during their recent visit to Hokitika. Permission was granted Kiwi Chib to send a team to West port next Saturday, ami £3 was granted towards the expenses. Permission was granted the Excelsior Club to send a junior team to West port on October 1. It was decided to suggest to the West Coast Union that the match between Excelsiors and Stars be j.laved next Saturday. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded 3ZR for its , splendid broadcast of the Coast a • Buller match on Saturday last, anl the Secretary was instructed to convey the Sub-Union’s thanks by letter. Ihe sum of £1 Is was voted towards the expenses incurred. It was decided to congratulate the West Coast Union on the performance of its team last Saturday, and to convey the thanks of the Hokitika members for the attention shown to them. The Chairman handed the McGregor Banner to Mr Bell, on behalf of the Kiwi junior team, winner of the junior competition. Mr Bell briefly returned thanks. The Hokitika Ladies’ Hockey Club teams for the Newman Cup six-a-side tourney to-morrow are as follows: A team —M. Hughes, J. Hall, P. Dowell. ,T. Collett, M. Sumner. E. Tulloch. B teani —N. Yarrall, E. Kerr, M. Cameron. M. Daly, B. Brooks and T. Saxon. The Rover Club’s teams will be chosen from the following: Mrs Eager, Mrs Rutland, D. Stopforth, A Stapleton, R. Ward. R. A meeting of flie local Model Aero Club was held last evening, there being twenty-eight members present. An interesting lecture on the making of a was given by Mr B. Flinn, after which each member made one. In connection with the model plane display on October 10th, Mr A. 11. Nancekivell promised aeroplane rides to the two members who flew their models the longest. As a result of a competition the Eagle squadron gained supremaev by nine ’marks. The boys ‘ire showing very keen interest in this novel sport. Canon IT. E. Newton, formerly Anglican Vicar of Ross, and a. well-knowii mountaineer, between the years 1901 and j. 907, recently resigned his living at Hclmsley, England, owing to ill health. It is recorded in the. “Church Times’’ of August 5, 1932, that the; patron of the living of Hclmsley, the Earl of Feversham, supported by Dr. Blair (Vice-Chairman of the Parochial Church Council), Colonel Duncombe of the hamlet of Rievaulx Lady , Marjorie Beckett, Dr. Porter, and

many parishioners, met to present. Canon Newton (who has resigned from the living on account of ill-health) with a- copy of the Revised Version of the Bible, in six volumes, bound in blue morocco, and a cheque, as a token of' their esteem, and regard for his work during the past nineteen years.
