GANDHI’S FAST

Government’s Concern WILL REMOVE HIM FROM JAIL. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, September 15,. Tin? -Goveribinent’s intentions regarding Gandhi, in view of his vow to begin on September 20, a “fast unto death,” were announced in the Legislative Assembly, at. Simla, this afternoon, and ar P set out in the following statement issued by the India Office i n London. Gandhi made clear, by his correspondence with the Prime Minister, that he pro, poses to starve himself to death, not as a protest against detention, or against measures taken to deal with civil disobedience, generally, nor with the object of securing release, but on a pioint of principle, which is not related to the civil disobedience movement. It has been decided that as soon as Gandhi actually begins his fast, he should be removed from jail to a suitable place, a private residence, and the only restriction that will be imposed |upon him there, as at present contemplated, is that h> should be served with an order directing him to remain there. It is hoped that it will prove mTieerssary to impose any fnn-.er restriction on Gandhi but this, is a matter that will depend primarily on whether the liberty accorded him is found to lend itself to the promotion of the civil disobedience movement, or any similar agitation, directed against the Government, or to affect the maintenance of law and order.
