HOKITIKA NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent.) HOKITIKA, September 16. Rain has been falling throughout to-day, and the temperature became decidedly lower, making it very unpleasant weather. General concern was felt at the news of the further serious earthquake disturbance early this morning on the East Coast district of the North Island, but relief was felt when it became known that the casualties were few and that there had been no fatalities* A number of local Rugby enthusiasts arc travelling to Westport in order to «ee the match to-morrow between Buller and West Coast representatives fur the S' ddon Shield. The local members of the West Coast team left this morning for Westport. The last time the teams met at Westport, Buller had an easy victory by 27 points to nil, but the losers on that occasion were not fully representative of the West Coast, and in the previous game at -Greymiouth Buller had not such an easy victory, the scores being 9 to 6. It is therefore anticipated that despite the possibility of th P ground being heavy and more suited for the Buller forwards ’ typo of play, the game to-morrow will prove a fairly even and exciting onn A grand ball will be held in the Soldiers’ Hall in aid of St. Mary’s Parish funds on Wednesday, September 2Sth.

For the last couple of days very .little, if anyj whitebait has been caught in the Hokitika River, though quit P a number of men have been fishing for them. At AH Saints’ Hall last, evening an enjoyable dance was hold, and a statue dance was won by Miss M. Chesrerman and Mr J. Bell; and a Monte Carlo waltz by Mrs Thompson and Mr Howard.

The football match here to-morrow is the fmanl of th P .Junior Knock-Out Competition between Rimu and Ross. The Kiwi junior team, -winners of the Westland Sub-Union championship is travelling to Kumara to-morro w to play Blackball (winners of the northern district championship) for the Wise Cup.
