(Our Own Correspondent.; Yesterday’s Elections. WESTPORT, May 12. Keen interest was taken in yesterday ’s locai body elections, and quite a large gathering attended in the vie iiiity of the County offices to await the posting of the results. The fact that the Medical Association had fuui candidates in the field tor the five vacancies on the Hospital Board, lc..i u new phase to the polling. The nominees did remarkably well and were accorded support to the extent of over 1200 votes from ratepayers. Owing to the insistent demands for relie. from the unfortunate Millerton people the candidature of R. Finlayson was considered the most important, and bis election will be welcomed in t.h;«.t district, and must be accepted by the Board as a gesture that something w:T» have to be done to relieve the dis tress there. Mr Cox; (Ngakawau, nominee of Stockton Association, was only beaten by a margin of 42 votes by Mr Griffiths for a scat on the Board. All the Association's candidates polled well in the mining districts and Mr Finlayson defeated the present Chairman of the Board, Mr Mclntyre, by a respectable margin o'he total votes cast at Denniston, Stockton, Millerton, and Burnetts lace. In the latter place, Mr Finlayson received 68 votes and Mr McIntyre six. In the County Council elections, > Mr A. Wathey, nominated by Denniston Union officials, defeated Mr Hawes the retiring member for the Waimangaroa riding by 30 voles. When everything is taken into account, it must be admitted that the Medical AssocTh tion’s candidates did exceedingly well, and now that the procedure of seeking direct representation on local ladies has been established, their tas>; ’u future election should be mu'en easier.
