DOUBLE DROWNING FEARED. WAIPUKURAU, May 2. It is feared that a double drowning occurred in Lake Purimu early on Monday morning. Two young men, James George Syme and his brother Allen, both single, disappeared while duck shooting in a boat. A search party went out, but no trace of the men or the boat was found. TARANAKI DROWNING. HAWERA, May 2. A search party to-day recovered the' body of Wm. H. Rook, of Patea, who was drowned when a boat capsized on the lake at Manutahi on Sunday evening. ESCAPE FROM CUSTODY. WELLINGTON, May 2. Captured on Willis Street by civilians about 5 o’clock this morning, and detained on a charge of breaking and entering the house of Dr. lan Ewart, at 141 Willis Street, William Alexan-. dor Crossan, a boot repairer, aged 33, climbed a ten foot fence at the back of Mount Cook Police Station, three hours later, and escaped. He is still at large. ESCAPES FROM BURNING HOUSE. 1 WELLINGTON, May 2. A cottage occupied by Mr and Mrs Shaw and child, situated at Point Howard, was destroyed by fire at 4 a.m, to-day, the cause being unknown. Mr and Mrs Shaw escaped in their night attire, as the fire prevented exit by the door. Shaw had to lower his wife and child 15 feet from a window on the southern side to the foot of the basement of the htfuse. Only fierce wind and rain prevented the fire spreading to unoccupied houses on the other side of a narrow right of way. HARBOUR COLLISION. WELLINGTON, May 2. A collision between the auxiliary scow Echo and the Eastbourne ferry steamer Muritai, occurred on Saturday at 4 p.m. The Echo, when off No. 1 berth, Queen’s Wharf, collided with the Muritai, which was coming in from Eastbourne. There were few passengers on the Muritai at the time. No damage was done to the Muritai, and very little to the Echo, which continued her voyage to Blenheim.
