FRENCH ELECTIONS Will Government Go ? (Aus. A N.Z. Cable Assn). PARIS, May 1It is estimated that 85 per cent, of the eleven and a-half million voters polled at the French general election to-day, which was the quietest ever known in France, indicating the realisation of the gravity of the economic and international issues.

The first French election results show that M. Tardieu (Premier) and M. Herriot (an Opposition Leader) have been re-elected by large majorities. Others re-elected include the Minister of Justice, M. Reynaud, and the Minister of Commerce, M. Rollin; also the ex-Premier, M Painleve; the Minister of Finance, M. Flandin; the Socialist Leader, M. Blum, and the Right Leader, M. Marin. The Socialist Bartholmy, to the general surprise, was defeated. He has been a Communist Part}’ deputy for Saint Denis since the year 1920. M. Lorin, a Deputy for Bordeaux, while waiting the result of the election, collapsed and died. The election was quiet. The only exciting incident was at the Ivry Town Hall, where the staff are all Communists. A group of the Nationalists climbed to the roof where they hoisted the tricolour. A sharp fight followed. The police arrested twelve of the Communist clerks and porters. EARLY RETURNS. PARIS, May 2. Out of 139 results to hand, the Par ties supporting Premier Tardieu show a nett loss of two seats. There will be a second ballot necessary in 198 seats. The voting shows a marked swing to. the Left.
