£23,500,000 ANNUAL WAGES BILL. Some conception of the possibilities that commercial afforestation hold for New Zealand is revealed in a statement contained in the latest publication issued by N.Z. Perpetual Forests, Ltd. (the largest commercial afforestation company in the world), concerning one of the last remaining stands of timber in the United States, situated in the State of Washington. This State is onlv half the size of New Zealand, with practically the same population, yet the logging, lumber and paper mills and wood working plants paid out in wages alone an average of £23,500,000 per annum over the last four years.
