A London cable states that the Chairman of Lloyd’s at London presented Lloyd’s silver medal for meritorious services to Captain William Gilling, of the motor ship “Port Fremantle,’’ for his services during a fire while loading at Wanganui in January, and also a cheque for £lOO, his share of a sum which the owners and underwriters subscribed for the officers and crew. A cable from New York states: Mrs Reginald Hargreaves, who, as a little girl, inspired Lewis Carroll to write 4 “Alice in Wonderland,” has arrived at New' York from England aboard the “Berengria” to participate in the celebration of the hundredth anniversary of the author’s birth at Columbia University. The death occurred at the Grey Hospital on Saturday evening of Joyce May, eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs Henry James Kerr, of 21 Lord Street, Greymouth, at the age of four years and nine months, following an operation. The child was accidentally struck by a railway engine at the Albert Street railway crossing on April Sth, when she received only slight injuries. The funeral will take place at Christchurch to-morrow. The death took place suddenly at his parents’ residence early on Saturday morning of Hugh, younger son of Mr and Mrs G. R. Hudd, Chapel Street, Greymouth, at the age of 22 * years. Deceased had not been in robust health, but retired on Friday night iv his usual good spirits. He •was found on Saturday morning to have expired, presumably during sleep. Educated at the Marist Brothers’ School, deceased was of a genial nature, and was esteemed by all who knew him. He was for a number of years in the employ of Messrs Manson and Co., Drapers, Mawhera Quay. Besides his parents he is survived by one brother, Janies, of the Railway Department, Lyttelton; and one sister, ® Miss Winifred Hudd, of Greymouth.
