MAGAZINE EVENING. A magazine evening wag held in the Club Room on Friday night, when ■ eral most interesting papers were given by members, discussion taking place o n each of them. Mr .> Booth presided. Mr W. D. Murray addressed the meeting on the Ottawa Conference and stressed the need for Empire preference and the wish that the participants might be broadminded enough to consider the question on the wide basis. _ 1 Mr B. M. Davis dealt with theories of evolution. especially that part, concerned with the work of Charles Darwin and Gregor Mendel. • Mr Machu proposed a remedy for the* present depression, claiming that the cause is the over valuation of the farm lands and that they must be reduced. Mr Mosley gave a n interesting description of the Sydney Harbour Bridge from a general anj engineering viewpoint. Mr H. Haigh expounded an alternative system of proportional representation, whereby the voter firstly for his party and theVan. didates (Thompson System). Mr T. Learmont discussed modern eloquence and dealt with the requirements of speaking—“ Know your sub-, ject, your audience, and then go to it.” J
