A start was last week made with the survey of the Snowy River Sluicing Company’s water race at Hukawai, by the surveyor, Mr T. Learmont, and it is hoped that within the next few months a start will be made with the construction work.

Mining people in the Inangahua and Grey Valley districts will be concerned to learn that a petition fostered by a public man and signed by a considerable number of land owners has been sent to Parliament with the object of having the law amended so as to prevent sludge channels being secured for gold mining purposes. Such an interference would only serve to nip the mining revival in the bud on the Coast.

The Greymouth Municipal Band, under the conductorship of Mr W. M. Garth, visited the Grey Hospital yesterday afternoon, and played an excellent programme before a very large attendance. The various items played w’ere excellent, showing that the Band still maintain a high standard. The programme was as follows: March, “Boulder City”; tenor horn solo, “Silver Threads Among the Gold,” Mr J. Henderson; hymn, “Be By My Side”; descriptive fantasia, “Rustic Scenes”; serenade, “Beautous Night”; march, “Sons of the Soil”; God Save the King.
