(Per Press Association). BLENHEIM, April 29. At the Pieton Court yesterday, Ernest Charles Lawrence, proprietor of the Portage Boardinghouse, Marlborough Sounds, pleaded guilty to three charges of selling drink without a license.

A Wellington detective staying at the house had no difficulty in obtaining beer and whisky, for which the guests played table tennis. A quantity of liquor was seized. It was explained by defendant that holiday-makers clubbed in and arranged for him to get liquor for them. Defendant was fined £25 on the first charge, and £2 each on the other charges. Satisfied that some hens and ducks, bought by a Chinese, Leo Chong, and kept by him in a box, were not properly cared for, and came within the statute forbidding cruelty, Mr Page, S.M., fined the offender £4.
