REEFTON NOTES

(From Our Own Correspondent.) REEFTON, Ap’ril 29. There was a large attendance at the concert and dance held by the Black’s Point Tennis Club at Black’s Hall last evening, including many from Reefton. The concert programme was a really good one. After the concert the hall was cleared and 'there was dancing to the music of Mrs McHenry. Air H. Alil'er proved an efficient M.C. Nominations of candidates for the Inangahua County Council and Hospital Board closed to-day at noon, when the follow:ng were received:—Reefton Riding: J. B. Auld (nominated by C. J. Blackmore and C. Nevin), D. Panckhu.st (nominated by G. E. A. Hubbard); Cronadun Riding: F. W. Archer (nominated by J. O’Regan and P. J. Gallagher), J. O’Rega n (nominated by Patrick Smith and F. W. Archer); Anontio’s Riding: J. O. Byrne (nominated by J. F. McNamara and W. Clayton), V\. C. Clayton (nominated by J. R Jones and J. O. Byrne), G. B; Alclnroe (nominated by T. W. Bannan and C. Nevin); Crushington Riding: T. R. Watson (nominated by J. Bolitho and T. H. Lee); Alaruia Springs Riding: W. Blackadder (nominated by Julia P. Williams and W. J. P. Williams).' Bannan for Antonio’s Riding, but it was too late to be included. From the above nominations it will be seen that the only elections will be that for Antonio’s Riding and that for the Hospital Board. At the Magistrate’s Court, Job Hughes (Inspector of Alines), proceeded against William James Morris (Air Patterson) for failing to have installed in his mine a ventilating fan when same was deemed necessary by the Inspector. A similar charge was also brought against William Wood, as manager of the mine, but the Inspector iriiimated that he would withdraw this case if a conviction were record-

ed against the mine owner. The latter was convicted and fine c ] £2 and costs 10s. the charge against Wood being withdrawn. For riding a, bicycle on the main road at Cronadun after dark without a light, Sydney Arthur Watts was ordered to pa v costs 10s. In the Wa. den’s Court costs of £125 were allowed as ag a ’ ns t W. J. Morris (Air Patterson) iu his claim against the Consolidated Gold Fields of New Zealand L'td. (Mr Hannan) for £2500 as damages for wrongful removal of soil, e ar th, and certain fixtures from land hold by plaintiff under an ordinary prospecting license. Judgment was for defendant. Consolidated Gold Fields of New Zealand Ltd (Mr Alorgan) for a special site license over 2 acres in Block XIV., Reef ton S.D., and for leave to amend such application by altering the description of the area applied for. Objected to by William James Albrris (Mr Patterson). Leave was given to amend. The application was granted as anKnded. Costs wore allowed against the objector of £2 2s. William James Alorris, for a special quartz claim license over 20 acres i n Block XIV., Reef ton S.D.; objected to by Consolidated Gold Fields, Ltd. The application was refused, and costs of £2 2s were allowed Ito the objector. Blackwater Alines Ltd. (Air Alorgan) for reduction of rent under three rpec’al quartz claim licenses for one year.—Granted. Thomas Hubert Lee for seven ordinary prospecting licenses each over 100 acres, ami. all situate in the Stevenson’s Flat District.—All granted. C. W. Adams, W. and L. Johnson (Air Morgan) for an ordinary prospecting license over 50 acres at Kirwan’s Hill.—Granted. D. Absalom and F. Harrison (Air Patterson) for an ordinary prospecting license over 80 acres in Block XIII., Waitahu S.D. —Adjourned to May 12. Arthur Thomas Brooks for a water-race license., four heads, near Slab Hu't Creek. —'Withdrawn. Snowy River Sluicing Co. Ltd. (Air Patterson) for leave to amend application No. 57/1932 for a water rac e license.—Granted.

INANGAHUA HOSPITAL BOARD. The ordinary meeting of the above was held last evening. Present: Messrs J. B. Auld (chair), F. Seawright, G. B. Alcluroe, J. O. Byrne, W. Blackadder. J. O’Regan and AV. F. Archer. The Nurses’ and Midwives’ Registration Board wrote re this Board’s protest against the former Board cancelling the Reef ton Hospital as a “B” grade training school, stating it failed to see that it was in any way penalising Reefton Hopsital; that it was unable to alter its decision; and that from April 17 the Reefton Hospital would cease to be a training school. The Health Department acknowledged the Board’s letter notifying that AVaiuta Hospital is to be closed. Grey Hospital Board wrote re Trembath family, and the information required is to be supplied. It was decided to renew the Board’s radio set license. Cashmere Sanatorium advised that G. T. White is making slow improvement. Matron Sharpe,

Waiuta Hospital enclosed £ll 15s lidl maternity fees, and asked for travelling , fees. It was decided thalt the travel-1 ling expenses be refunded. Dr. Bridge- 1 man (Christchurch),. Dr. F. Birkenshaw (Hawera), Dr. W. A. Alexander (Takapau, Hawke’s Bay), Dr. L. Myers (Karori, Wellington) and Dr. D. G. Wallace (Ashburton) wrote for particulars as to the position of Medical Superintendent at Reefton. Dr. Mclntyre, Cashmere, advised he would see T. patient s on May 6at Reefton Hospital. Waiuta Medical Association wrote that Dr. H. Logan, the appointee, had arrived and had commenced practice, and the Association asked that an agreement be drawn up, submitting proposals. It was resolved that the Waiuta Medical Association be informed that the Board adhere !to the resolution passed at last meeting. The Association also wrote re the contents of Waiuta Hospital, asking tha't an inventory be taken anj that the Board treat the Assoc’ation as liberally as possible. Mr Byrne moved that the Chairman and Secretary visit Waiuta and finalise matters with the Waiuta Medical Association. This was seconded by Mr Mcluroe and carried. The Waiuta Association forwarded £2 10s voluntary contributions collected up' to March 31st, also an account from Kempt home, Prosser for drugs. The Chairman reported that the town members had attended to the medical agreement, which was now in order. The follow ing applications were received for the Medical Association:—Dr. Frank Birk’nshaw C.M. (Hawera); Dr StraL lard (Sydney) and Dr. R. A. Marshall. M. 8.8.5., N.Z. (Wellington) It was resolved to forward the applications to the Minister for Health. The estimates were approved. Dr. J. L. Wicken, Medical Superintendent, reported: Admitted 21. discharged 21, died 2, remaining 25, operations 9, anaesthetics 8. outpatients 5, attendance 10, births 7. Matron Gibson reported that Nurse Peters returned from annual leave on April 24th. Nurses August. R. McLean and Hay were on annual leave. Mrs Ramsay returned on April 27th. Miss M. Hickey commenced duty as probationer on April 11th. Mr Scott applied for holidays suggesting that the patient, Mr Askew,, could relieve him. Linen was required and material for pyjamas and hospital garments. It was resolved that Mr Scott be given his holidays, and that Mr Askew be appointed to relieve him. COUNTY COUNCIL. At the meeting of the County Council there attended Crs J. O’Regan (Chaiiman). J. O. Byrne, D. Panekhurst, Thus. Watson, F. W. Archer. W. Clayton. W. Blackadder, J. B. Auld. . A reduction of water charge was granted for Newman’s garage., and a connection with the supply for Mrs G. Parish ’s residence was author sed. It was decided to urge on the Prime Minister the continuation of the Buller Gorge railway along the lines suggested by the Bulb*r County. The Foreman was instructed to attend to road at W. O’Malley’s at Ikam.atua; to a drain a t Amery s property (di th Landing Creek Road; to report on the cost of extension of bridge at J. D.' Andrew’s property at Rotokohu; and ascertain what extent Mr Andrews will assist in this matter, also to attend to the road to Williams’ homestead at Waitahu. and ‘.to put in some work on Rosstown protection work. A. Thompson, Springs Junction, was given permission to erect a fence on th 0 road in front of his property at Maruia.

The Minister of Mines and Mr O. C. Black. M.P., wrote re road access to Alexander Mine. It was decided that the Public Works Department be asked in what manner the money is to bo expended, the Council suggesting that unemployed labour be used and subsidised from the grant to give men full time. W. Burnett wrote re the state of the road leading to the coal mines at Bourke’s Creek.—Left to the foreman for attention. J. Comerford and Sons asked for assistance in providing road access to property recently purchased by them. —Granted. Johnson and Party asked that Vietor a Range Track be put in order for horse traffic, and also from the manager of th e Waitahu Sluicing Company regarding the same matter. —Resolved that the Mines Department be asked fo*- an urgent grant of £l6O for this work. P. J. O’Regan asked for attention to road leading to his property at Coal Creek. —Referred to foreman for attention. W. C. Mirfin wrote regarding Mirfin.’s Road. The foreman is to give it some attention. Longman Bros, wrote for assistance i n providing access to their land near Mawheraiti. —Referred to the foreman. David Ross asked for attention to Adamstown Track. —Left to the foreman. Alexander Mines a sked that they be permitted to occupy a small piece of land at Stevenson’s Flat or usc as a motor garage.—Granted. Reefton Prospecting Association asked tha’t a track be cut on the east side of Lake Christobel.—The Association is to be informed this is a matter for th?. Grey County Council. M. Waddell wrote re cost of closing drain on his property. A grant is to be made for expenditure on cement. G. B. Mclnroe wrote for permission to erect a petrol pump at Ikamatua. The matter of the drain at Waiuta Domain was referred to the foreman, and he was authorised 'to expend £lO and to spend the money under Scheme No. 5. It was decided that the Over seer engage unemployed labour on Stevenson’s Flat Track, and the Coup c’l subsidise such men to the extent of two days per week extra. The Foreman was instructed to procure a waggon for use with a portable

cinching plant, and to place running boards On Brown Creek road bridge at Ward’s Mill. The Chairman reported on the visit of himself and Cr. Archer and the Foreman to Archer Bros, at F- rn Flat regarding road access, and stated the Council would require a road reserve which wou.’d cost approximately £5. Cr Archer moved that the Public Works Department b<* asked to undertake the survey of the road. Seconded by the Cha’rman. with view to giv ing access to Douglas’> propertv.—Carried. It way resolved that the matter of the repairs to the mouth of the sewer be left iti the hands of town members, and foreman fo r inspection, report and attention.
