HOKITIKA NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent.) HOKITIKA, April 29. In each riding there will be con tests for the election of the Wesland County Council, but no ballot is need ed for the Power, Hospital and Harbour Boards, as only the required number of candidates has been nominated. The Council nominations are:—Northern Riding.—J. A. Murdoch, B. Ward and L. H. Witherington. (two required). Central Riding.—T. R. Ohesterman, M. Keenon, H. Wells, W. A Jamieson, R. Whiley. (three required). Southern Riding.—J. Cooper, James Donovan, M. Houston, Wm. Jeffries, J. J. McKay and W. Searle, (four required). The other nominations are: —Hospital Board; G. Davidson, W. Jeffries, AV. A. Jamieson, M. Keenan, R. Meharry and H. Wells. Harbour Board: M. Houston and D. P. Stuart. Power Board: R. Whiley, B. Ward. D. P. Stuart, W. J. Butler, T. R. Chesterman, T. AV. Duff, J. A. Murdoch, I'. Selby and T. W. Bruco.

At the Boxing Club's meeting the balance sheet of the recent gathering showed the following figures:—Amusement taxi £6 13s 2d, preliminary bouts £2 ss, N.Z. Boxiing Council charges £2 Rs lid. baths committee percentage £- 14s 6d, cartage, gloves and sundries £() 2s Bd, IT. Johns’ share £lB 9s 2d, Johnnie Leckie’s share £l5 Thgate takings were £63 19s lOd leaving a credit balance of £5 Ils lid. It was decided to hold an open tourney efcrly in June.

Splendid preparations are being made for the Rimu Goldfields Jubilee celebrations next Wednesday, when a large gathering is expected. Letters and donations are coming to hand from all over New Zealand from old Rimu residents. One letter recalls the day of the Rimu Rush when three boys met —Alf Dehn, Jack Mulligan and Jack Stoop. All are still alive and well, and hope to be present. The pre ■ cession will be a great feature.

A very successful concert and dance wa? held at Kokatahi on Wednesday night, opening with an orchestral selection by Misses E. and V. and Mr P. Crough. These players also provided the dance numbers. Songs were rendered by Mrs A. Perry, Mrs J. Macfa rlane, Misses E. Dale, M. Jones, A. Lynn. R, Morgan, J. Warren, M. Han rahan, also Messrs A. Perry, S. Brooks and T. Stopforth, a vocal duct by Misses R. Ward and M. Jones.; a piano duet by Misses M. and P. Carroll: violin selection, Mr Percy Crough; piano solos. Misses G. Jacobs and F. Carroll; playette, Misses E. E. and L. Dale and K. Kennedy; monlogue, Miss M. McGavin; dialogue, Miss M. MeGavin and Mr S. Blank; humour. Mr S. Brooks; national dancing, Miss C. Knowles; classic and operatic dancing Misses June and Vivian Heenan. Finale, National Anthem.

A meeting to arrange for the Plunket Society ball was presided over last evening by Mrs Geo. Perry. Mr T. Cagney was appointed secretary and Mr J. Mclntyre treasurer. It was resolved to hold the ball on AVednesday May 25. The following sub-commit-tee were appointed: Decorative —Mes dames Butler, Langford, Robinson. Messrs Mclntyre, Darby, Brown, Eade, H. Park, Collett and J. Robinson. Cakes—Mesdames Eade. Wilson, Collett. 11. Park, Menzies, D. Stuart, T. Stewart, Parkhill, Benjamin, Hagar, Warren and C. Hart. Coulson, Morrison, Kernahan and Dr Hart. The next meeting was set down for Thursday the 19th May at 7 p.m.

The local aeroplane to-day made strip to Greymouth where leaflets advertising to-night’s Aero Club Bal; at Hokitika were distributed from the air, but a good many of them fluttered awav to sea.

To-morrow sees the football competitions commence. For the KiwiRiuin match at Rimu the teams are:— Rimu: Thorpe, Growcott, Hyndman. The Mayor requests that all business premises in the Borough observe a whole holiday on Wednesday next for rhe Rimu Goldfield Jubilee celebration. At the Magistrate’s Court to-day, Mr W. Meldrmn, S.M, dealt with eases as follows.—Judgment by default was given in the following cases:— Westland Hospital Board v. Andrew Hackell, 18s; same v. Albert Searle £5 2s, and costs £1 12s Gd. E. M. Neu son was charged on five counts with failure to pay tho unemployment levy, and was ordered to pay 5s costs. For being on licensed pernnses after hours a defendant was fined £2 and costs lUs. Three motor drivers were fined for breaches of traffic bye-laws. Stanley Dale (no light after dark), Gorden Harcourt (no tail light) and Harry Voel (cutting a corner).

Six men were charged to-day with disorderly behaviour on March 30 at Upper Kokatahi; namely Thomas Harcourt, Richard Andrew Harcourt, tree. G. Atkinson, Arthur Lambert, David McWha and Een Wilder. Thomas Ha : court was also charged with using obscene language. Pleas of guilty weie entered in all cases. For defendant:Mr Murdoch appealed for suppression of the names of them who were under 21 years of age. The Magistrate declined, adding that they were old onoug’i to know what was right and what wa-< wrong. They were all convicted ou the misbehaviour charge, and were ordered to pay costs varing from Ils to 13s. On the other charge Thomas Harcourt was fined £1 and costs. The scene of the disturbance was outside thu Upper Kokatahi Hotel, where the police stated, they were refused dnniby the licensee. Defendants claimed that the bad language complained o’ was used towards their motor car an-i not the licensee or his wife. The xVlag Istrate said there was no doubt thar. the language was used, and in a loan voice, although perhaps it had bet n used to the car.
