PRISONER’S ESCAPE
At Mt. Eden DASH FROM WARDEN’S HOUSE. AUCKLAND, April 29. A prisoner .at Mount Eden Gaol, Frederick Will’am Schluter, or Sluter, aged 42 years, escaped from custody shortly before four o’clock this afternoon, and at a late hour he was still at large. At the time of his escape, Schluter, who is a mechanic by .trade, was engaged in connecting ’.telephone wires from the gaol to one of the warders’ houses in Clive Road, Mount Eden, at the rear of the gaol reserve. In order to accomplish this work, the prisoner wag permitted to leave the gaol grounds under the escort of a warder, and to enter the house in Clive Road. While completing the installation of the telephone in 'the house, Schulter made a sudden dash past ‘his guard, and out of the building. Although the warder immediately started in pursuit, h e was unable to overtake the prisoner, who ran across the reserve and into some scrub near Mountain Road, where he disappeared from sight. The Gaol authorities wer e informed by telephone of the escape, and’ a party of warders a!t once instituted a search, combing a wide area of the scrub-covered ground adjoining the gaol p'roperty. A short time later a detective and constables from the Central Police Station arrived on rhe scene, and joined in the search, but they discovered no trace of the missing man, who is thought to have been aided by friends.
