taken out only on the other two runners. The totalisator officer ordered the return of the money, less commission. THE TWO THOUSAND GUINEAS. LONDON, April 27. The Reefton Jockey Club has decided to hold a winter meeting at the Reefton Racecourse on June 4th. The programme will comprise seven events (live galloping and two trotting), and the total stakes to be offered, will total £350. RACING NOTES. Spoon will be off the scene for the winter months, for she is to enjoy a spell until the spring. She has left J Murray Aynsley’s stable, and, in the future, will be trained by F. E. Jones.

Blacksmith is back again on the tracks after a short spell, and he is doing his work with plenty of dash. Judging by his form on the flat at the Trentham meeting, Blacksmith is going to develop into a speedy hurdler. Leitrim, At his best a classy sprinter, has been schooled over the hurdles, and has shown excellent form. In his last start he won convincingly over a distance'. and he is one to keep in mind for early engagements at the jumping game

Minerva] has been working in his usual good style, and this unlucky horse should win soon. On his form at the Easter meetings, where he ran seconds on both days to Rational IT., ho must be extremely dangerous in his engagements at Amberley. Muff, who is engaged in. the G.-B. Starkey Memorial Handicap, should give a good account of herself in that event. She has performed solidly in mile racing, giving every indication that a distance is well within her powers. Her recent track work has been pleasing, and she is very fit.

Juniper was allowed to drop out of the big race at South Canterbury, but there is nothing wrong with him, and, all going well, he may start in the G. B. Starky Memorial Handicap at Amberley. He has worked consistently well since running a good race in his last outing. The field at Amberley is not over strong, which should sec Juniper in a foremost position at the finish.

Ranelagh has been very disappointing in his recent races, and this good horse is not improving in his moody ways. He works as well as any other horse at Riccarton, but never seems to produce this form in public. He may do it right at Amberley. Lochlaggan will contest the open sprint race at Amberley and she should be very hard to beat as she will have a handy weight. She has been working in fine style ,and the brilliant way she gathers speed, combined with the marked solidness in her finish, indicates that she is a much improved filly.

Charmeuse raced well for a mile in the principal event at the South Canterbury meeting, but then failed to run on. At present she cannot be recommended over long journeys. Lady Zephyr’s second at South Canterbury was her best effort to date, and she showed definite improvement. Sho shows considerable promise. Quinopal, according to a Christchurch writer, was not handled to the best advantage in the Hurdles at Washdyke on Saturday, and is expected to produce winning form at an early date.

Dunraven disappointed at for he was backed with every confidence. At no stage of the race did he look like winning. His track work of late has been very good, but the brother to Limerick is a horse of another colour on race day. Ramo’s winning sequence came to an end at the South Canterbury meeting, where he finished fifth in the principal race. He was in a good position, most of the way, but his resolute finishing effort was not there. However, he is now well up in the weights in such a class. Shatter’s win in the Teschemaker Handicap, the chief event at South Canterbury, was a very impressive performance. He tailed the field early, but a furlong from the post he had the race won. He should win more good races. TROTTING NOTES. Manna’s Son. who competed in the Elstow Handicap at ■ Te Aroha on Saturday, is reported to be one of the best two-year-old trotters ever seen in Auckland. At Wednesday’s meeting of the Board of the New Zealand Trotting Association, the deaths of the following horses wore reported: Country Belle, Gold Zone, Lady Mac, Lonesome, Murieata and Pillage. Red Spur, a three year old by Wrack from Gianella, paced a sound race in the Otipua Handicap at South Canterbury. He soon worked his way to a good position and though beaten by Tatsy de Oro, he held off al] the cithers without trouble. The Oamaru trained gelding is one of the most promising young pacers in sight and he should do big things next season. The Canterbury-trained representative in the Te Aroha Trotting Club Handicap, Mr Penalty, suffered a very

narrow defeat in that event. The judge’s decision was in favour of Kewpic’s Guy, half a head being the official margin, while the third horse, Arabond, was only a head further away. Mr Penalty has, with one exception, raced very well on the northern circuit, the exception being at the Thames fixture, where he was never really dangerous. E. C. McDermott has not had Symmetry very long, having started her only twice since he leased her from Dr. G. Haskins a couple of months ago, but he has reason to feel pleased with his new r charge, as he has earned a first and second stake with her in as many starts. As Symmetry is only a four-year-old she should be capable of showing much more improvement. That the name of Bingen is likely to endure in the light harness sport in New Zealand was further brought, to notice at the Te Aroha meeting on Saturday where Summertime and Mild Derby both sired by representatives of tho Bingen blood, were returned as winners. Summertime is by Herbilwyn —who was mated with a few mares before being gelded—by Nelson Bingen, and Mild Derby is by Nelson Derby, also by Nelson Bingen. There are several Nelson Bingen stallions at the stud in New Zealand at present, and in most cases they have sired winners. A rather unusual occurrence took place at tho South Canterbury meeting on Saturday when one of the trotting events came up for decision. D. Teahen was granted permission to parade his Rey de Oro two-year-old, for educational purposes, in the preliminary, which he did, but when the field was despatched the two-year-old was seen trailing the other horses in the rear of the field. The youngster completed the journey.

Kewpie’s Guy, who won the To Aroha Handicap in a very close finish from Mr Penalty and Arabond, and returned her admirers a large dividend, is a six year old mare by Blue Mountain King from Kewpie. She was a very successful performer last season, and she had won two races earlier this season when trained by J. T. Paul at Mangere. She has recently been trained at Epsom by W. Willetts. Tatsy de Oro has done a good deal of racing this season and she has a number of smart performances to her credit. She did 3min 24 1-5 secs for a mile and a half when she ran second to Avaunt in the Rakaia Handicap at the Ashburton meeting this month. On the strength of that effort she was solidly supported in the Otipua Handicap at South Canterbury. She was well placed alj through the journey and her stamina enabled her to win easily. Success over two miles may be expected for her later on.
