To Improve the Railways Position The People’s Opportunity DESPITE the difficulties of the depression, the New Zealand Railways are paying working expenses, providing for depreciation, and earning part of the interest on capital. It is the shortage on the interest side that requires a call on the Consolidated Fund (drawn from the general taxpayers) to balance the budget. A.gain of traffic at this stage means that the great bulk of the resultant revenue is available for the interest account, and correspondingly eases the burden of the general taxpayers. Losses of traffic which should rightly go to the railways reduce the Department’s employing strength and increase the load on taxpayers. Strengthening the railways strengthens New Zealand.
