HOKITIKA NOTES

(From Our Own Correspondent.) HOKITIKA. April 28. The aeroplane recently purchased at Wellington by Mr Arthur Nancekivell, of Hokitika, landed this afternoon ar th 0 local aerodrome, after a flight from the other side of the island. The owner did not, as first intended, make tho crossing in th e plane, having come on here by train yesterday from Christ church. The machine was piloted on the flight by Flying Officer McDonald, of Wellington Airways, and also brought a passenger. The flight occupied a couple of hours, Christchurch being left at 2.30 p.m,. and the landing ground at South Hokitik a reached at 4.30. Strange to relate ther e was a horse on the ground to welcome the plane. In future,, however, it will be preferable to keep such four-footed aviation fans off the area, at least when planes are arriving. The landing was safely negotiated. The pilot stated that the journey was hampered by clouds, th e plane having to ascend to a height of eight thousand feet, and fly at that level. It evidently veered to southward in crossing the ranges, as it approached Hokitika from that direc. tion, and pased over Wataroa. No doubt the machine will soon become a familiar feature of the welkin in the near future.

For 129 hours’ dredging last week, the Okarito Dredging Coy. obtained 44<>zs 9dwts of gold. There are to be contests in all three ridings of the Westland County at the coming elections, the nominations for which close to-morrow. Mr D. His right hand was caught in the machine and the index finger was broken in two places, tho second finger was taken off above the second joint, and the other fingers lacerated. The injury caused much pa n, but Mr Diedrichs was easier this morning. General regret is felt locally at tho news of the death of Rev. Father J. Ainsworth, S.M., at Christchurch, as he was for several years Parish Priest here until he was succeeded about 25 years ago by the late Rev. Father J. Clancy. Deceased had latterly been in charge of Temuka Parish, but previous l v was a well-known missionary. Many here recall his very eloquent sermons. Among hi s surviving relatives is a nepfaew a t Wanganui who is also in tho ranks of jhe priesthood. The Competitions Society Committee meeting yesterday was attended bv Mill. J. Evans (President), Mrs McGavin, Messrs Richards, Stapleton, Duff, Heenan, Menzies, Sweney, Osmers (Secretary), and Rev. H. J. Knights. Mr J. One novelty of the evening will be tbu giving of free fights to the winners of th? special numbers and the winners of the lucky spot waltz.
