British Meat Trade FOE DOMINIONS. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn.i (Received April 28 at 11.10 p.m.) LONDON, April 28. | According to the “Daily Herald,” a scheme has secretly been prepared for submission to thc Ottawa Conference. tho ultimate object of which is Ito crci-.o ~.i Empire monopoly of the British meat market by means of tariff preferences. The “Herald” says: A manifesto, signed by representatives of British, Australian, New Zealand and Canadian meat interests, has been approved by the National Union of Farmers, but it has been suspended momentarily, owing to the reluctance of certain British interests to put their names to the scheme, which includes fresh, frozen and chilled beef, mutton, pork, lamb, bacon, hams and veal. It is suggested that the meat imports be ’regulated according to the seasonal requirements of the British markets. The “Daily Herald” editorially condemns the scheme, which, it points out, would be bound to raise prices and would only lead to reprisals by Argentine and by Denmark.
