TEMPLETON FATALITY

COAST EXPRESS KILLS WOMAN. CHRISTCHURCH, April 28. As the result of a collision between a motor car and the West Coast express, at Templeton crossing, Mrs J. A. Murphy received injuries from which she died half an hour after admission to the hospital. Two other occupants were treated as outpatients and discharged. The car was smashed to pieces. A West Coast passenger on the express stated on arrival at Greymouth that the impact with th e motor-car (a Ford) was not felt by 'the passengers, some looking, however, saw what seemed a shower of debris at the crossing. The car was thrown a distance of about 17 feet, and the two occupants, Mr and Mrs Murphy, were thrown a distance of about 35 fee!t on to the concrete road. They were conveying farm produce to market. The view of the train as the motor approached would be obscured by some trees, the tops only of which had been cut, and the driver of the car would have little time to judge the speed of the train. No blame could be attached to the loco driver, who pulled up within the train’s length. The passengers took up a collection on the train for the victims of the tragedy. Mr Murph v was completely dazed, while his wife was lying unconscious on the road with fatal head injuries when assistance reached her. The ambulance came from the city. The 'train was delayed about 40 minutes., but was only about ten minutes late on arrival here.
