U.S.A. PRESIDENCY

Roosevelt and Smith A CHANGE IN THE RUNNING. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn.) (Received April 27 at 9 p.m.) NEW YORK, April 27. Incomplete returns of Tuesday’s primary election in the States of Massachusetts and Pennsylvania indicate that Governor Roosevelt of New York State, and •ex-Governor Alfred Smith have divided the honours. Mr Roosevelt is apparently winning a substantial majority of Pennsylvania’s 76 Presidential nominating delegates, while Mr Smith has made a clean sweep of Massachusetts’ 36 delegates. Counting his previous victories, Mr Roosevelt retains a commanding lead of pledged delegates. However, his latest decisive defeat in Massachusetts is a severe blow to his prestige.
