WESTPORT NOTES

(Out Own Correspondent. j Star Club’s Annual Meeting. WESTPORT, March 31 The seating capacity at the County Chambers was fully taxed last night when Mr R. O’Neill occupied the chair at the meeting of the White Star Football Club. The balance sheet showed •i good credit. The President, in the course of a lengthy report of last sea son’s activities, congratulated thesenior fifteen upon retaining the Albion Cup for the fifth year in succo.> sion, and the third grade team »»n winning the Foote Shield. The Clui» suffered a severe blow through the I deaths of Messrs W. Hobbs, J. Ryan and F. Upham, and sincere sympathy was extended to the relatives in their loss. The untiring efforts of the Ladles' Committee were much appreciated. The medals donated by Messrs J. Prince, T. Murphy and J. Green stimulated keen interest and the committee fully appreciates their very thoughtful action. The trophies were awarded to Messrs Pryde, Woodward, Craddock and Ahern, who were chosen as the most improved players in the three grades. The report was adopted s satisfactory. The election of otficers resulted as follows: —Patron, Mr J. Scanlon, President, Mr R. O’Neill; Vive-Presidents, Messrs E. Samuel*. M. O’Dca. S. Davis, .1. Brown, T

More Telegrams. In an effort to alleviate the economic ills of the people of Millerton, who have been, for some, considerable time living in a state of destitution, numer ous telegrams have been dispatched to the Prime Minister, but up to the present no attempt has been made by the authorities seriously to consider the problem. Until such time as the Government provides a source of relief, the matter will be a liability for the Hospital Board, and the chairman anticipating numerous requests for grants from. Millerton, has sent the following further wire to Mr Coates: “'The Millerton miners have not drawn any wages for five weeks, and cannot do so for another ten days. Buller Hospital Board has given them temporary relief, but cannot, continue doing

so. If Unemployment Board would make Millerton April allocation for intermittent work available early next week, it would be much appreciated. '

Shipping. The Kartigi sailed this morning for New Plymouth, Bluff, Lyttelton' ami Dunedin. The Komata is due to-day from Wellington and is announced to sail on the return trip on Friday at S p.m. The Kanna arrived from Greymouth to complete loading and later

sailed for Auckland. The Rata an I Gael both left Wellington last night for Westport. The Canopus sailed yesterday morning for Auckland. Wedding.

St. Canice’s Church was the seem, of a very pretty wedding last nighwhen Jessie, daughter of Mr and Mrs Paul, Westport, was married to Claude, only son of Mr and Mrs Hartel, also of Westport. The Rev. Father Pheln-i i conducted the ceremony. The bride who was attended by Miss Walsh. cou-< in of the bridegroom as bridesmaid was attired in a charming frock of blue georgette. Miss Walsh wore a frock of fawn crepe-de-chine, relieved with pink georgette. Mr Owen Prince acted as best man. A reception was held at the Black and White Hotel. The dining room was decorated by an effective arrangement of flowers. The happy couple left for the South on an extended honeymoon. Cricket St. Canice's and Granity elevens will play an important fixture on Sal- - next. If the former can secure a three point win they -will be honours oven with the two leading teams in the senior competition with l 3 points each. Granity if successful will again become champions. Denniston are at the bottom of the ladder with five points. United’s total of 13 [mints includes a three, point win Jo. a game defaulted by Granity, the N.Z. Cricket Council ruling that full points be awarded for a win by default.

Boxing Outlook. Vai Borcovsky is a much sought

after amateur, but despite efforts of Westport Blenheim and Wellington Associations, which included an oiler of £l5 from the latter body as expenses his services could not be procured. If such a princely sum is offered by a big association for the appearance of an amateur, one wonders how AH the little fellows are going to struggle along. The last two tournaments in Westport were poorly a: tended and the takings were small, and if amateurs can turn down offers like the Wellington one it looks as i' wrestling will be the only sport in the roped square as far as this district is concerned. It is also difficult to understand how an amateur could accept £l5 expenses and retain his status.
