Canadian Attitude

BRITISH GOVERNMENT CONSULTS DOMINIONS (Aus. & N.Z. Cable Assn). March 31 at 8.40 p.m.) NEW YORK, March 30. The “New York Times’s” Ottawa correspondent states: —Although the Canadian Government have not intimated to President De Valera that, if the Oath of Allegiance is abolished, the Free State will not be invited to the Imperial Economic Conference, the Government have, unexpectedly, issued a White Paper, elaborately setting out the Free State’s obligations in respect of the oath, and also of land annuities, the only apparent purpose for which is to prepare the public mind for such action as is contemplated should President D c Valera repudiate the oath. In the absence of any definite Government statement, the prevailing attitude is that if the Irish Free State repudiates membership of the British Empire, it has no place at the council tables of Empire conference, and will not ba permitted there if Canada’s protest avails.

It is understood, that the British Government have consulted Canada and other Dominions regarding the developments in the Free State.
