Very many friends throughout the West Coast will regret to learn of the death of Mr John Joseph Halpin, until recently one of the best known settlers in the Totara Flat district, who yesterday passed away after a lengthy illness at the Lewisham Hospital, Christchurch. A native of Ireland, and 69 years of age, the late Mr Halpin was at one time connected with the coaching business in the Grey Valley, and over twenty years ago he began farming at Totara Flat, and proved successful in his enterprise. He sold out his land some three years ago to the Government, and retired to live at Christchurch. He took a lively interest in the turf and was the owner of several horses. His wife predeceased him about ten years ago, and he is survived by a daughter residing at Christchurch. The funeral takes place to-morrow morning at Greymouth.

A very pleasant function took place at the Grey Main School yesterday afternoon when the teaching staff gathered to bid farewell to Miss Borgia 1 McSherry. A sumptuous afternoon | tea was served, after which the headmaster, Mr J. Graham, presented Miss McSherry with two beautifully bound volumes. In making the presentation, .he referred to Miss MsSherry’s wondlerful work as a teacher and a musician her work for the children under her charge having been in every sphere of the highest excellence, and an admirable example for all. Bhp would I carry away with her the heartiest good 'wishes of every one of the staff. Mr ißollinson stated that Miss McSherry had been not only an ideal teacher, i but. one of the best of sports endearing herself alike to her pupils, her colleagues and all who knew her. She would bo greatly missed, and while they felt sorry at her departure, she could be assured of the very best, wishes of her fellow teachers and the children. Miss McSherry feelingly replied. and thanked the donors for their gifts and for the kind sentiments that they had expressed.
