WESTPORT NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent.) Hi gh Rent. WESTPORT. March 30. The matter of high rentals is fast becoming a problem for the workers in the district, and it is time some move was made to provide a reduction of hens'ng costs for struggling families It is all very well to wish landlords to the place which is reputed tc be very hut. but that will get us nowhere. A body of those suffering from high rent costs must get together and formulate some plan of campaign with a view to getting the evil remedied. At present, with low wages and unemployment, high rent is a constant source of worry and thought for the housewife, and to bring about any relief of the burden a concerted move will have to be made by those concerned. Homing Club. Under the auspices of the local Homing Pigeon Club six birds were released recently at Nelson, but adverse flying conditions were responsible for only the appropriately-named, W. Simpson ’s “Cyclone.” being clocked in. A heavy fog spoiled visibility with the result that five of the birds were unaccounted for within the prescribed time. In a short distance event from Denniston, Mr J. Dunn’s “Misty Morn” was the first bird home. Nir Murray’s “Sunrise” and “Maid of Perth” occupied second anj third positions respect l vely. The Kivell Cup. The many contests be*-ween the Misses Walls and Robertson at the local baths have provided keen and interesting races and associated with the remarkable swimming achievements of the young ladies has been the close interest in their work shown by Mr and Mrs Kivell. The former who has a habit of taking no credit for anything he has done for swimming has in no small way been responsible for the efficiency, in the art. reached by the girls. In the final for the Watersiders’ Cup, only the girls above mentioned competed and Mrs Kivell donated a miniature s'lvor cup to Miss Robertson, the runner-up. Mr .and Mrs Kivell are pil’ars of strength to swimming in Westport, and the part they are playing in helping on the pastime is* appreciated bv all frequenters of the baths. Picnic. The combined Bible Classes from Denniston Millerton and Westport, journeyed to Mokihinui yesterday and in beautiful weather held their annual picnic. A sports banner awarded for the highest aggregate points scored in the various events was won by Westport Anglican wth 63 points. Miller■on S'cured second position with 62 points ami Westport Presbyterian was third with 52 points. The banner was presented to the victors by Rev. Sj Webber, Westport Veterans’ Association. At the quarterly meeting of the local branch of the South African Veteransf Association, Mr J. W. Jopc presided, ami those present were Messrs Curtis, Anderson, Erskine, Hart, McFarlane, Gilm s. Carr. B yan. Knight and liar rs. After the transaction of routine business an enjoyable social evening war held ami a lengthy list of toasts was honoured. Rowing. The members of the local Rowing Club who journeyed to Nelson to compete for the Gothard, Harley and .Jones Cups returned to Westport last night. The crews were unfortunately unsuccessful in their mission, but the pleasant time which marked their stay at Nelson fully compensated for the, disappointment, and the visitors are full of pra : sp for the many considerations extended to them during their stay by the Nelson sports. In the Go hard Oup race Nelson four scored a five length victory but. a closer finish marked the contest for the Harley Cup. when Kawatiri were not a length behind when the winning post waf reached In the Jones Cup race which is confined to youths Kawatiri wore aga’n beaten by Nelson. A Good Performance. If the feat of A. Caldwell/of Westport, in winn'ng (he mil? qnd three miie cycling events at the. Motucka sports meeting on Monday can be accepted as an indication, it ieoks as if th(» wet weather which was.responsible for the abandonment of tjie cycling events at the competition jor the Mahar Cup iccontly, spoi’ed tire Westport reprt“ entativrs ’ chances of bringing home the trophy. Caldwtfll is not considered as good a cyclist as Samir'ls, the other member of the team which was chosen to compete for the Mahar <’up. an ( ] it now seems that, if the ■■ ements had been kina on that occa- • ion, the Westport t-earn would have secured sufficient points to gain the t rophy. Cricket. Those who bore in mind the suggestion of a local contemporary to the of-

feet that Mike Gilbert should have b“i'n given a chance to bowl against (he South Africans were surprised that he was not awarded a few overs in the match. Coast v. Buller played on Mon day last. The fact that ho was not considered good enough to dismiss any of our Buller batsmen should settle any pretensions the “Westport News” might hold of his right to international honours. Shipping. There were no arrivals in pert yesterday. Th? s-s. Canopus sailed at 3.30 this morning for Auckland. Have you seen Jeff’s new Bowser? — Advt. Andy Phillips is now at the Sergeant’s Hill Hotel, where a welcome awaits all.—Advt.
