SWIMMING CARNIVAL

BURNS CUP TO WESTPORT McConville’s Attempt on Record The John Bums Challenge Cup aga'n changed hands last evening at the Municipal Baths, when a strong Westport team successfully challenged a <lej>lete<i Greymouth team, the holders of the trophy. Greymouth were without the services of K. Griffen and A. Lane, who were replaced by H. and W. O’Leary, while Cobden, the other chal-

lengers had two replacements. R. Quinn and L. Lind taking the places of J. Taafe and H. Wills. The weather was well-nigh perfect and there was a large attendance. The racing was close and exciting, and the Challenge Cup competition was a close contest between Westport and Greymouth. both teams being level before the last Cup event, the relay race, which was won by Westport. The Cup points were:— West port. 19 Grey mouth 15 Cobden 9 A strong team of Westport, lady swimmers competed and “’’cooped the pool’’ in the ladies’ events, while Miss Robertson one of the team, finished second to E. McConville in the Open 33 1-3 Yards Handicap. E. AfcConvillo, holder of the New Zealand 50 yards official record (fr< r style) < f 26 3-ssecs, who recorded 25 4 sspcs at a carnival held at Westport on Alureh 4th. made an attempt 1o b vak this latter record, but failed, his time b ing 26secS.
