The first sitting of the Central Transport. Licensing Authority under the Transport Licensing Act commenced at Wellington yesterday. Gangs of men have been engaged throughout the week 1 in an endeavour to clear the slip which on Sunday morning last brought down about 150,000 tons of rock into the Seven Mile Creek, at the Middle Brake State coal mine, but so far the obstruction has not been cleared and the creek is still blocked up. It is estimated that the water is about thirty feet deep in places behind the huge mass of stone. If the channel is not cleared very soon to allow the water to get away there is every possibility that the foundations of the Power House will be affected.

A young man, Mr Alan .Rodgers, received a severe kick on his right knee from a horse on Thursday. The horse, the retired galloper. Kiladdie, was harnessed to a lorry, but refused to budge. Rodgers, who was sitting on the lorry, began hitting it with the reins, and the horse lashed out, catching him on the knee. He was given medical attention, but will not be able to resume work for some da vs.

It is seldom that a single potato root yields as much as 171bs of firstclass tubers, but the above remarkable result has been obtained by a local resident, Mr Joseph Anisy, of Tainui treet. Out of 32 seed potatoes selected at random from amongst the ordinary household variety, Mr Anisy has succeeded in harvesting a total of over two hundredweight. In addition to the Toot yielding 171bs, several others gave from 14 to 9 lbs, the total crop averaging 71bs per root.
