Fires have recently been started by thoughtless persons in the scrub on the Harbour Board reserve at the Ten Mile, . thereby endangering the Coast Road, because the loss of the vegetation is sure to increase the likelihood of slips at the, embankment where the scrub has been burned. The matter has been brought under the i-otico of the County Council and the Harbour Board, and if whoever is responsible for such fires is identified, a prosecution is to be ordered.

Mr W. Girling Butcher, Inspector of Fire Brigades for New Zealand, v. ho has succeeded Inspector Hugo, and who is at present on a visit to the West Coast, last evening made an inspection ’of the Grey mouth FireBrigade. A letter !was received from; tfho Public Trust Department at last evening’s meeting of the Grey Hospital Board regarding the estate of the late Micheal McLellan. The Chairman, Mr Hannan, stated that about 22 years ago, the late Mr McLellan bad died and left a sum of money some £2OO, in Nova Scotia, to the Grey Hospital Board. It was many years ago and the Public Trust were asking whether the Board would cam to go any further in locating the inheritance, and would the Board guarantee the cost" of doing so. “I do not think it is worth the Board’s while to go to any expense in chasing all over Nova Scotia,” said the chairman. ”1 think that we should no’ bother and leave the ”fortune” in Nova Scotia.” Other members con curred with the chairman.

To replace the steamer Breeze on the South Island-Wellington-Wangan-ui run, the Canterbury Steam Shipping Company have taken over from the Anchor Steamship ’Co., Nelson, the steamer Orepuki. After the Canterbury Company’s Calm had paid off on Monday morning, the master, officers, engineers, and cook left Lyttelton by a special service car for son, where the Orepuki was yesterday commissioned. The Orepuki will go to Wellington to be slipped for cleaning and painting, and will then come south to load. The Orepuki was originally the River Tay and was brought out from England by Reese Bros., for the West Coast timber trade. She was sold to the Anchor Company in February, 1925.
