INDIAN BATTLE

POLICE V. CONGRESSMEN. (Aus. & N.Z. Cable Assn). CALCUTTA, February 16. A furious battle took place at Tarpur, jn the Monghyr district, between the police and Congressmen, resulting in , heavy casualties. Mr Edward Lee. district Magistrate and Mr W. McGrath, Superintendent of Police, were visiting Tarpur to discuss the situation and unrest with the local police officials. While the conference was proceeding, the Congressmen arrived and made a desperate attack on the police station. The police stoutly defended it against a mob of thousands strong. The police eventually fired into the crowd and charged. Eight men a re dead and eight are in a critical condition, while on the police side, the District Magistrate, and Superintendent of Police and 24 police were injured by bricks, and other missiles.
