HOKITIKA NOTES

(From Our Own Correspondent.) HOKITIKA, February 17. A fair number of Reefton people today joined in the annual school excursion from that district, and the visitors spent a pleasant day at Cass Square. After a fall of rain in the morning, the weather cleared and was fine all day. The Westland Hospital Board is to receive £5OO opt of the £38,000 remaining of the £75,000 grant for hospitals. Three bridges of standard type are now under construction in South Westland in the glacial region, one over O’Neill’s Creek, Tetaho, at this side of Waiho; another over Gibbs’ Creek, at the other side of Waiho, and the third over Rocky Creek, near Weheka. A br.dge for the Fox River has been designed, while another will be required for the Cooks River, which are not fordable by cars in the warm season when rhe snow is melting. These bridges will make motor traffic to and from Bruce Bay as easy as for the places to the north. There are now many reFef workers in South Westland, of whom not a few have come from the Buller Gorge, and they have a branch of the New Zealand Workers’ Union. If the Fox bridge is put in hand soon it will be a means of affording these men further work. At present they are doing good work between Waiho and Weheka. Near Waiho a deviation road for a mile is being made, and the road thence to Docherly’s Creek is being widened. Over Oemaroa and the Waikukupa Saddles the road is also being improved, and narrow places widened. In the cricket match between Ross and Rimu at Rimu, the latter team won by 39 runs. Bi mu scored 87 (T. Knowles 62). Houlahan taking 6 for 27; and Ross replied with 93 (H. Jones 23, O’Connell 21). Knowles bowling for Bi mu took 5 for 43. Rimu declared, its second innings closing at 80 for seven wickets (Knowles 25) and left Boss with 75 runs to make. The innings however closed for 36, Stephens 5 for 10 and Knowles 3 for 18 securing the w’ckets.

Timber-cutting licenses to-day granted by the Westland Land Board were: —R. C. Feary and J. J. Kelly, 100 acres part Blocks 1 and 2 Ahaura; W. Mooie 20 acres Block 10, Mawheranui; O. A. Kel-y, area on Sections 3094 and 3098, Block 2, Ahaura; Omoto Sawmill Coy., area in Block 5, Cobden. The Okarito Five Mile Beach Gold Company had a wash up for the week •ending February 13th of 530 z IGdwts for 122 hours’ dredging. Mr T. W. Duff, the senior Executive Officer of St. Paul’s Methodist Church, and the Bev. T. KnowlesSmith, are proceeding to Christchurch this week 'to attend the MetWodist Conference.

A Domain Board has been formed at Waiho, and not only a sports ground, hut an aeroplane landing site is being prepared. No doubt aeroplanes are in the not distant future destined to be used largely by tourists to reach the glaciers, and a landing ground may a'so be expected to bo formed at Wehok;) for visitors to the Fox Glacier.
