TECHNICAL SCHOOL

MEETING OF BOARD. The monthly meeting of .the Board of Governors of the Greymouth Technical High School was held last evening. , Present: Messrs T E. Coates (Chair . man). W. Blair. J. Goodall, F. B. Lawn. C. K. Millar, W. Kyle, A. J. Fairmaid, I J. B. Kent. Mrs Shuttleworth and the i Principal. Mr J. ITut’on. Accounts amounting to £lOl Os. 2d I were passed for payment. j The Chairman said the return of £145 from the fete which had been handed ] to the Borough Council for relief of unemployed was a wonderful one, reflecting great credit on the Ladies’ Committee, the pupils and all those who ; assisted in making the fete a success. , O u his motion, a vote of ‘.thanks was passed to all those who assisted. Miss McDonald advised that she would be able to resume duties, after ; [absence through illness, on November' *l6',h. | Mr Kyle, reporting for the Visiting Committee, stated that two hand lawnmowers were required. It was decided to procure one good mower. Mr Lawn: I’ll move we get a British; machine.

Dr. Mcßrearty and Mr F. B. Lawn were appointed a Visitjng Committee for the ensuing month. Regarding the attitude of .the Education Department in not appointing any: pupil teachers this year, the Principal stated that, whilst they recognised the difficulties, the Government were working under, it was not economical that they should not pick out the cream of probationer teachers and appoint, say. te n per cent, of the total applying for positions. He would sooner see a further cut in salaries than the loss of good teachers. There was relatively a great number of girls who had applied. He would prefer to see boys appointed. It would be a saving in talent, as there were some eminently suitable for teachers, and it was a pity they could not be appointed as otherwise they would drift info poorer positions. The tender of the “Grey River Argus” Company for the printing of the 1932 prospectus was accepted. PRINCIPAL’S REPORT. I The Principal reported as follows for the period ending November 6th, 1931: —The month has mostly been a routine one. Grounds work at the Hostel is now showing good results. As a result of the Fete held to assist the Mayor’s Unemploymenlt Fund a cheque for £145 14s 3d has been forwarded to the Town Cleik as a donation towards the fund. The Department asked for the use of this building for the Public Service Entrance Examination this year and as there is now room available I took the responsibility of saying that I could see no objection as it would not interfere with the work of the school. Senior Free Place candidates are now being assessed by me as to their fitness for recommendation. The report was adopted.
